Why do you keep on rebelling?
The whole head is hurt,
and the whole heart is sick.
“What are all your sacrifices to me? ”
asks the LORD.
“I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams
and the fat of well-fed cattle;
I have no desire for the blood of bulls,
lambs, or male goats.
Put no more trust in a mere human,
who has only the breath in his nostrils.

“that my people are taken away for nothing?
Its rulers wail” —

“and my name is continually blasphemed all day long.
How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of the herald,
who proclaims peace,
who brings news of good things,
who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns! ”
“Why do you spend silver on what is not food,
and your wages on what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and you will enjoy the choicest of foods.[fn]
“Why have we fasted, but you have not seen?
We have denied ourselves, but you haven’t noticed! ”[fn]
“Look, you do as you please on the day of your fast,
and oppress all your workers.
