This man came to him at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.”
John responded, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.
He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.”
“We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him.
“If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.
“Until now you have asked for nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
“I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect[fn] them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.
“May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be[fn] in us, so that the world may believe you sent me.
“I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.
“I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me.
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation.
