You have shriveled me up[fn] ​— ​it has become a witness;

my frailty rises up against me and testifies to my face.

How long, exalted ones,[fn] will my honor be insulted?

How long will you love what is worthless

and pursue a lie?Selah

You destroy those who tell lies;

the LORD abhors violent and treacherous people.

“If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit;

if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences.”

for destruction will come suddenly from them;

who knows what distress these two can bring?

For you said, “We have made a covenant with Death,

and we have an agreement with Sheol;

when the overwhelming catastrophe[fn] passes through,

it will not touch us,

because we have made falsehood our refuge

and have hidden behind treachery.”

“And I will make justice the measuring line

and righteousness the mason’s level.”

Hail will sweep away the false refuge,

and water will flood your hiding place.

Therefore the Holy One of Israel says:

“Because you have rejected this message

and have trusted in oppression and deceit,

and have depended on them,

He feeds on[fn] ashes.

His deceived mind has led him astray,

and he cannot rescue himself,

or say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand? ”

“Yet in spite of all this, her treacherous sister Judah didn’t return to me with all her heart ​— ​only in pretense.”

This is the LORD’s declaration.

“Surely, falsehood comes from the hills,

commotion from the mountains,

but the salvation of Israel

is only in the LORD our God.

They bent their tongues like their bows;

lies and not faithfulness prevail in the land,

for they proceed from one evil to another,

and they do not take me into account.

and utters empty lies ​—

“I will preach to you about wine and beer” —

he would be just the preacher for this people!

“I will send it out,” ​— ​this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies ​— ​“and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by my name. It will stay inside his house and destroy it along with its timbers and stones.”

“I will come to you in judgment, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident alien. They do not fear me,” says the LORD of Armies.
