“I baptize you with[fn] water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove[fn] his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

“Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for[fn] people.”

“You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me.

“But I tell you, love your enemies[fn] and pray for those who[fn] persecute you,

“For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?

“Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.

“If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you ​— ​you of little faith?

“Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

“Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves.

“Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers! ’[fn]

“and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.

“Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.

“But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,

“When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

“The one who welcomes you welcomes me, and the one who welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

“If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Jesus answered them, “I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

“Which of the two did his father’s will? ”

They said, “The first.”

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.

“This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.

Jesus replied to them, “Watch out that no one deceives you.

“Then they will hand you over to be persecuted, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name.

“He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you! ’

“But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal,[fn] to capture me? Every day I used to sit, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me.

“Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there.’ Listen, I have told you.”

“If this reaches the governor’s ears, we will deal with[fn] him and keep you out of trouble.”

“I baptize you with[fn] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

“Follow me,” Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for[fn] people.”

“If any place does not welcome you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”[fn]

He replied to them, “You unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”

“And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ ​— ​truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.

Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; then answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you.

“But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts,[fn] and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

“So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

“Otherwise, when he comes suddenly he might find you sleeping.

“But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

“Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

“But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there just as he told you.’ ”

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with[fn] the Holy Spirit and fire.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you: Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it? ”

Blessed are you when people hate you,

when they exclude you, insult you,

and slander your name as evil

because of the Son of Man.

“Woe to you[fn]

when all people speak well of you,

for this is the way their ancestors

used to treat the false prophets.
