But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah:
Because out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.”
But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:
He will give his angels orders concerning you,
and they will support you with their hands
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.”
Then Jesus told him, “Go away,[fn] Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”
“So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
“leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.
“Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to[fn] the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.
“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
“And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
“Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord.
“But I tell you, don’t resist[fn] an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
“As for the one who wants to sue you and take away your shirt, let him have your coat as well.
“Give to the one who asks you, and don’t turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
“So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
“But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
“so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]
“But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]
“Therefore, you should pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
your name be honored as holy.
“so that your fasting isn’t obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.[fn]
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
“But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!
“Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye?
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye?
“Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.
Just then some men[fn] brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”
“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — then he told the paralytic, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”
Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ”
As he was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,[fn] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
“This is the one about whom it is written:
See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”
Then he told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored, as good as the other.
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[fn]
“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”[fn]
“For God said:[fn] Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.
Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment[fn] her daughter was healed.
“But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.[fn] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”
“If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.
