But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together,
After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:
Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield;
your reward will be very great.
“However, I will judge the nation they serve, and afterward they will go out with many possessions.
“Abraham is to become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.
She also said to him, “We have plenty of straw and feed and a place to spend the night.”
He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him.
Then Jacob said, “Look, it is still broad daylight. It’s not time for the animals to be gathered. Water the flock, then go out and let them graze.”
And the man became very rich.[fn] He had many flocks, female and male slaves, and camels and donkeys.
For their possessions were too many for them to live together, and because of their herds, the land where they stayed could not support them.
Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth around his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance — like the sand of the sea — that he stopped measuring it because it was beyond measure.
Joseph hitched the horses to his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. Joseph presented himself to him, threw his arms around him, and wept for a long time.

“You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result — the survival of many people.

“Tomorrow at this time I will rain down the worst hail that has ever occurred in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.
The hail, with lightning flashing through it, was so severe that nothing like it had occurred in the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.
“But if you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
The locusts went up over the entire land of Egypt and settled on the whole territory of Egypt. Never before had there been such a large number of locusts, and there never will be again.
A mixed crowd also went up with them, along with a huge number of livestock, both flocks and herds.
When they measured it by quarts,[fn] the person who gathered a lot had no surplus, and the person who gathered a little had no shortage. Each gathered as much as he needed to eat.
“You must not follow a crowd in wrongdoing. Do not testify in a lawsuit and go along with a crowd to pervert justice.
“I will not drive them out ahead of you in a single year; otherwise, the land would become desolate, and wild animals would multiply against you.
“When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days, though it is not the time of her menstruation, or if she has a discharge beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, as she is during the days of her menstruation.
“You are to increase its price in proportion to a greater amount of years, and decrease its price in proportion to a lesser amount of years, because what he is selling to you is a number of harvests.
“If many years are still left, he must pay his redemption price in proportion to them based on his purchase price.
Even when the cloud stayed over the tabernacle many days, the Israelites carried out the LORD’s requirement and did not set out.
“See what the land is like, and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many.
“I will strike them with a plague and destroy them. Then I will make you into a greater and mightier nation than they are.”
Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that abundant water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
“Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt many years, but the Egyptians treated us and our ancestors badly.
Then the LORD sent poisonous[fn] snakes among the people, and they bit them so that many Israelites died.
Moab was terrified of the people because they were numerous, and Moab dreaded the Israelites.
Balak sent officials again who were more numerous and higher in rank than the others.
Water will flow from his buckets,
and his seed will be by abundant water.
His king will be greater than Agag,
and his kingdom will be exalted.
“Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one. Each is to be given its inheritance according to those who were registered in it.
“You are to receive the land as an inheritance by lot according to your clans. Increase the inheritance for a large clan and decrease it for a small one. Whatever place the lot indicates for someone will be his. You will receive an inheritance according to your ancestral tribes.
“Of the cities that you give from the Israelites’ territory, you should take more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one. Each tribe is to give some of its cities to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance it receives.”
