When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority? ”
Jesus answered them, “I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
“But know this: If the homeowner had known what time[fn] the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.
And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use to describe it?
and asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do these things? ”
Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; then answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which command is the most important of all? ”
Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.
“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
“If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.
“And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full.
“But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority? ”
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
“What things? ” he asked them.
So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,
Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me? ”
They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.
He said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God. After saying this, he told him, “Follow me.”
After they had Peter and John stand before them, they began to question them: “By what power or in what name have you done this? ”
“Heaven is my throne,
and the earth my footstool.
What sort of house will you build for me?
says the Lord,
or what will be my resting place?
After he[fn] read it, he asked what province he was from. When he learned he was from Cilicia,
But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? What kind of body will they have when they come? ”
Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring — what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.
They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.[fn]
For what credit is there if when you do wrong and are beaten, you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer, if you endure it, this brings favor with God.
