a. properly, of snares in which birds are entangled and caught, Proverbs 6:5; Proverbs 7:23; Psalm 90:3 (Ps. 91:3); Psalm 123:7 (Ps. 124:7); παγίδας ἱσταναι, Aristophanes av. 527; hence, ὡς παγίς, as a snare, i. e. unexpectedly, suddenly, because birds and beasts are caught unawares, Luke 21:35.
b. tropically, a snare, i. e. whatever brings peril, loss, destruction: of a sudden and unexpected deadly peril, Romans 11:9 from Psalm 68:23 (Ps. 69:23); of the allurements and seductions of sin, ἐμπίπτειν εἰς πειρασμόν καί παγίδα, 1 Timothy 6:9 (ἐμπίπτει εἰς παγίδα ἁμαρτωλός, Proverbs 12:13, cf.
