Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[fn] does, the Son likewise does these things.
“I can do nothing on my own. I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws[fn] him, and I will raise him up on the last day.
“The Spirit is the one who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.”
“For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
“Didn’t Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me? ”
“Yet, look, he’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?
“But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from.”
Then they tried to seize him. Yet no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.
When Jesus stood up, he said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? ”
“No one, Lord,”[fn] she answered.
“Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”]
He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple. But no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own. But just as the Father taught me, I say these things.
“We are descendants[fn] of Abraham,” they answered him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’? ”
“If I glorify myself,” Jesus answered, “my glory is nothing. My Father — about whom you say, ‘He is our God’ — he is the one who glorifies me.
“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”
“My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

“But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going? ’
“So you also have sorrow[fn] now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.
“In that day you will not ask me anything. Truly I tell you, anything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
“Until now you have asked for nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
His disciples said, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.
“While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction,[fn] so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.
This was to fulfill the words he had said: “I have not lost one of those you have given me.”
