Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry —
“A good tree doesn’t produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn’t produce good fruit.[fn]
“For each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs aren’t gathered from thornbushes, or grapes picked from a bramble bush.
“That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[fn]
Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.”
“For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.
“No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[fn] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.
“Consider the ravens: They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than the birds?
“Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.
“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
“But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
“For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect people,
“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me,[fn] a sinner! ’
And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
“For they can no longer die, because they are like angels and are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.
“Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.
