“No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.

“But if you don’t forgive others,[fn] your Father will not forgive your offenses.

“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal.

“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?

“And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread.

“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit.

“And no one puts[fn] new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

“All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires[fn] to reveal him.

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

“For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.

No one was able to answer him at all,[fn] and from that day no one dared to question him anymore.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.[fn]

“For at that time there will be great distress,[fn] the kind that hasn’t taken place from the beginning of the world until now and never will again.

“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows ​— ​neither the angels of heaven nor the Son[fn] ​— ​except the Father alone.

“Therefore be alert, because you don’t know either the day or the hour.[fn]

“Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.

“For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing concealed that will not be brought to light.

He lived in the tombs, and no one was able to restrain him anymore ​— ​not even with a chain ​— ​

He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

Aware of this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts?

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“Haven’t you read this Scripture:

The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

“Now concerning that day or hour no one knows ​— ​neither the angels in heaven nor the Son ​— ​but only the Father.

Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.

And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.

Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry ​— ​

“A good tree doesn’t produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn’t produce good fruit.[fn]

“That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.[fn]

Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.”

“For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,[fn] but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.

“Consider the ravens: They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than the birds?

“If then you’re not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

“But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

“no one will say,[fn] ‘See here! ’ or ‘There! ’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[fn]

“For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect people,

“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me,[fn] a sinner! ’

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

“For they can no longer die, because they are like angels and are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.
