“But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
Abimelech replied, “I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.”
“No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God? ”
“For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting.
But Moses replied to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent — either in the past or recently or since you have been speaking to your servant — because my mouth and my tongue are sluggish.”[fn]
“They will fill your houses, all your officials’ houses, and the houses of all the Egyptians — something your fathers and grandfathers never saw since the time they occupied the land until today.” Then he turned and left Pharaoh’s presence.
“Do not eat any of it raw or cooked in boiling[fn] water, but only roasted over fire — its head as well as its legs and inner organs.
The people baked the dough they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened loaves, since it had no yeast; for when they were driven out of Egypt, they could not delay and had not prepared provisions for themselves.
“Unleavened bread is to be eaten for those seven days. Nothing leavened may be found among you, and no yeast may be found among you in all your territory.
The water came back and covered the chariots and horsemen, plus the entire army of Pharaoh that had gone after them into the sea. Not even one of them survived.
So they set it aside until morning as Moses commanded, and it didn’t stink or have maggots in it.
Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.
Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me,
“You must not exploit a resident alien or oppress him, since you were resident aliens in the land of Egypt.
“Pay strict attention to everything I have said to you. You must not invoke the names of other gods; they must not be heard on your lips.[fn]
“You must not offer the blood of my sacrifices with anything leavened. The fat of my festival offering must not remain until morning.
“Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them[fn] and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.
“No woman will miscarry or be childless in your land. I will give you the full number of your days.
But Moses replied,
It’s not the sound of a victory cry
and not the sound of a cry of defeat;
I hear the sound of singing!
“But these are to be abhorrent to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures in the water.
“Do not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the resident alien; I am the LORD your God.
“Do not act unjustly when deciding a case. Do not be partial to the poor or give preference to the rich; judge your neighbor fairly.
“You are not to eat anything with blood in it.[fn] You are not to practice divination or witchcraft.
“You are not to cut off the hair at the sides of your head or mar the edge of your beard.
“He must not go near any dead person or make himself unclean even for his father or mother.
“The fiftieth year will be your Jubilee; you are not to sow, reap what grows by itself, or harvest its untended vines.
“Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you.
“Do not make worthless idols for yourselves, set up a carved image or sacred pillar for yourselves, or place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God.
“Yet in spite of this, while they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject or abhor them so as to destroy them and break my covenant with them, since I am the LORD their God.
“He may not replace it or make a substitution for it, either good for bad, or bad for good. But if he does substitute one animal for another, both that animal and its substitute will be holy.
“Nothing that a man permanently sets apart to the LORD from all he owns, whether a person, an animal, or his inherited landholding, can be sold or redeemed; everything set apart is especially holy to the LORD.
“then the man is to bring his wife to the priest. He is also to bring an offering for her of two quarts[fn] of barley flour. He is not to pour oil over it or put frankincense on it because it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering for remembrance to draw attention to guilt.
“You will eat, not for one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days,
“will ever see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have despised me will see it.
Then Moses became angry and said to the LORD, “Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.”
“Why have you led us up from Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It’s not a place of grain, figs, vines, and pomegranates, and there is no water to drink! ”
“Please let us travel through your land. We won’t travel through any field or vineyard, or drink any well water. We will travel the King’s Highway; we won’t turn to the right or the left until we have traveled through your territory.’ ”
The people spoke against God and Moses: “Why have you led us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food! ”
Then God said to Balaam, “You are not to go with them. You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed.”
The angel of the LORD went ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn to the right or the left.
God is not a man, that he might lie,
or a son of man, that he might change his mind.
Does he speak and not act,
or promise and not fulfill?
He considers no disaster for Jacob;
he sees no trouble for Israel.[fn]
The LORD their God is with them,
and there is rejoicing over the King among them.
There is no magic curse against Jacob
and no divination against Israel.
It will now be said about Jacob and Israel,
“What great things God has done! ”
For the LORD had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
and told him, “Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing.
“or without looking drops a stone that could kill a person and he dies, but he was not his enemy and didn’t intend to harm him,
