This one, at last, is bone of my bone
and flesh of my flesh;
this one will be called “woman,”
for she was taken from man.
The LORD God said, “Since the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not reach out, take from the tree of life, eat, and live forever.”
“So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood you have shed.[fn]
The LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
“Why did you say, ‘She’s my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now, here is your wife. Take her and go! ”
After Lot had separated from him, the LORD said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west,
“In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”[fn]
So she laughed to herself: “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I have delight? ”
Then Abraham answered, “Since I have ventured to speak to my lord — even though I am dust and ashes —
“Get out of the way! ” they said, adding, “This one came here as an alien, but he’s acting like a judge! Now we’ll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door.
“Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”
“Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”
Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.”
“Today when I came to the spring, I prayed: LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only you will make my journey successful!
He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth[fn] and said, “For now the LORD has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

And she conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Therefore she named him Judah.[fn] Then Leah stopped having children.
“God has given me a good gift,” Leah said. “This time my husband will honor me because I have borne six sons for him,” and she named him Zebulun.[fn]
“For you had very little before I came, but now your wealth has increased. The LORD has blessed you because of me. And now, when will I also do something for my own family? ”
“I am the God of Bethel, where you poured oil on the stone marker and made a solemn vow to me. Get up, leave this land, and return to your native land.’ ”
“In fact, all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So do whatever God has said to you.”
“but you didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters. You have acted foolishly.
“I could do you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Watch yourself! Don’t say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’
“Now you have gone off because you long for your father’s family — but why have you stolen my gods? ”
“If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, certainly now you would have sent me off empty-handed. But God has seen my affliction and my hard work,[fn] and he issued his verdict last night.”
“Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I. Let it be a witness between the two of us.”
He commanded them, “You are to say to my lord Esau, ‘This is what your servant Jacob says. I have been staying with Laban and have been delayed until now.
“I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. Indeed, I crossed over the Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.
“So now, come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of the pits.[fn] We can say that a vicious animal ate him. Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams! ”
“So now, let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.
“When we came to the place where we lodged for the night and opened our bags of grain, each one’s silver was at the top of his bag! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.
The steward replied, “What you have said is right, but only the one who is found to have it will be my slave, and the rest of you will be blameless.”
“One is gone from me — I said he must have been torn to pieces — and I have never seen him again.
“So if I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us — his life is wrapped up with the boy’s life —
“Now please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave, in place of the boy. Let him go back with his brothers.
“And now don’t be grieved or angry with yourselves for selling me here, because God sent me ahead of you to preserve life.
“Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “I’m ready to die now because I have seen your face and you are still alive! ”
“you are to say, ‘Your servants, both we and our ancestors, have raised livestock[fn] from our youth until now.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to Egyptians.”
And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to stay in the land for a while because there is no grazing land for your servants’ sheep, since the famine in the land of Canaan has been severe. So now, please let your servants settle in the land of Goshen.”
“Your two sons born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt are now mine. Ephraim and Manasseh belong to me just as Reuben and Simeon do.
“my father made me take an oath, saying, ‘I am about to die. You must bury me there in the tomb that I made for myself in the land of Canaan.’ Now let me go and bury my father. Then I will return.”
“‘Say this to Joseph: Please forgive your brothers’ transgression and their sin — the suffering they caused you.’ Therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when their message came to him.
