“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
“Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
“And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,[fn] truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note — your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.
“But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High. For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil.
“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don’t move from house to house.
“The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst, his body burst open and his intestines spilled out.
Now he who plants and he who waters are one,[fn] and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
For if I do this willingly, I have a reward, but if unwillingly, I am entrusted with a commission.
What then is my reward? To preach the gospel and offer it free of charge and not make full use of my rights in the gospel.
For the Scripture says: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”
Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.

The nations were angry,
but your wrath has come.
The time has come
for the dead to be judged
and to give the reward
to your servants the prophets,
to the saints, and to those who fear your name,
both small and great,
and the time has come to destroy
those who destroy the earth.
