Röm. ins Hebrew etc., p. 28) קַיָפָא)), Caiaphas; according to Josephus (Antiquities 18, 2, 2) Ιωσηπος, καί Καϊάφας (Ιωσηπον, τόν καί Καϊάφαν ἐπικαλούμενον, Antiquities 18, 4, 3), high priest of the Jews. He was appointed to that office by Valerius Gratus, governor of Judaea, after the removal of Simon, son of Camith, A.D. 18 (cf. Schürer, N. T. Zeitgesch. § 23 iv.), and was removed A.D. 36 by Vitellius, governor of Syria, who appointed Jonathan, son of the high priest Ananus (i. e.
