Page 1 / 3 (Mat 5:43–Rom 9:13)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR (fellow man) and hate your enemy.’
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].
“But I say to you who hear [Me and pay attention to My words]: [fn]Love [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for] your enemies, [make it a practice to] do good to those who hate you,
“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] [fn]only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Now before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that His hour had come [and it was time] for Him to leave this world and return to the Father. Having [greatly] loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [and continuously loves them with His perfect love] to the end (eternally).
“This is My commandment, that you [fn]love and unselfishly seek the best for one another, just as I have loved you.
So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these [others do—with total commitment and devotion]?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [fn]love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My lambs.”
Peter turned and saw the [fn]disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray You?”
And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved us [so much that He died for us].
