“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.

While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

“ ‘Master,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there’s still room.’

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters ​— ​yes, and even his own life ​— ​he cannot be my disciple.

“If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.

“So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.’

When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“For they can no longer die, because they are like angels and are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.

“For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me:[fn] And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him,

But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about! ” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

“Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from his mouth? ”

“He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,

But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? ”

He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you ​— ​that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
