John: To the seven churches in Asia. Grace and peace to you from[fn] the one who is, who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits[fn] before his throne,

“Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in[fn] the paradise of God.

I also saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals? ”

They said with a loud voice,

Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered

to receive power and riches

and wisdom and strength

and honor and glory and blessing!

If anyone is to be taken captive,

into captivity he goes.

If anyone is to be killed[fn] with a sword,

with a sword he will be killed.

This calls for endurance[fn] and faithfulness from the saints.

This calls for wisdom:[fn] Let the one who has understanding calculate[fn] the number of the beast, because it is the number of a person. Its number is 666.[fn]

“This calls for endurance from the saints, who keep God’s commands and their faith in Jesus.”[fn]

Enormous hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds,[fn] fell from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God for the plague of hail because that plague was extremely severe.

“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up from the abyss and go to destruction. Those who live on the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast that was, and is not, and is to come.

“Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he comes, he must remain for only a little while.

“These will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings. Those with him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

“And the woman you saw is the great city that has royal power over the kings of the earth.”

She was given fine linen to wear, bright and pure.

For the fine linen represents the righteous acts of the saints.

Then I fell at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers and sisters who hold firmly to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit[fn] of prophecy.”

He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan,[fn] and bound him for a thousand years.

I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books.

Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

“But the cowards, faithless,[fn] detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars ​— ​their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

The city had a massive high wall, with twelve gates. Twelve angels were at the gates; the names of the twelve tribes of Israel’s sons were inscribed on the gates.

The city is laid out in a square; its length and width are the same. He measured the city with the rod at 12,000 stadia.[fn] Its length, width, and height are equal.

I did not see a temple in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

Then he said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near.
