“And consider your relative Elizabeth ​— ​even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless.

Then they said to her, “None of your relatives has that name.”

He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.

“Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

They were all speaking well of him[fn] and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son? ”

He also said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? ”

“Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you?

“And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”[fn]

Then he told them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Then looking up at his disciples, he said:

Blessed are you who are poor,

because the kingdom of God is yours.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.

“A good tree doesn’t produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn’t produce good fruit.[fn]

“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them:

When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to grant this,

“and blessed is the one who isn’t offended by me.”

“This is the one about whom it is written:

See, I am sending my messenger

ahead of you;

he will prepare your way before you.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him ​— ​she’s a sinner! ”

Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins? ”

“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

“For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.

He said to them, “Where is your faith? ”

They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him! ”

“What is your name? ” Jesus asked him.

“Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him.

“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this I hear such things about? ” And he wanted to see him.

As the two men were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” ​— ​not knowing what he was saying.

Then a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen One;[fn] listen to him! ”

Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he’s my only child.

“Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.”[fn]

But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don’t move from house to house.

“All things have[fn] been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son desires[fn] to reveal him.”

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? ”

“but one thing is necessary.[fn] Mary has made the right choice,[fn] and it will not be taken away from her.”

“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure.

“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.

As the crowds were increasing, he began saying, “This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.[fn]

“Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness.

“But give from what is within to the poor,[fn] and then everything is clean for you.

Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, “Be on your guard against the leaven[fn] of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
