“When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. If the child is a son, kill him, but if it’s a daughter, she may live.”
Pharaoh then commanded all his people, “You must throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile, but let every daughter live.”
“However, I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go, even under force from a strong hand.
Moses answered, “What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’? ”
“If they will not believe you and will not respond to the evidence of the first sign, they may believe the evidence of the second sign.
“And if they don’t believe even these two signs or listen to what you say, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the Nile will become blood on the ground.”
“Go get straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but there will be no reduction at all in your workload.’ ”
“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh. It will become a serpent.’ ”
But Moses said, “It would not be right[fn] to do that, because what we will sacrifice to the LORD our God is detestable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what the Egyptians detest in front of them, won’t they stone us?
“But if you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
“If the household is too small for a whole animal, that person and the neighbor nearest his house are to select one based on the combined number of people; you should apportion the animal according to what each will eat.
“They must take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where they eat them.
“When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, you are to observe this ceremony.
“If an alien resides among you and wants to observe the LORD’s Passover, every male in his household must be circumcised, and then he may participate;[fn] he will become like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat it.
“When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites,[fn] which he swore to your ancestors that he would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you must carry out this ceremony in this month.
“you are to present to the LORD every firstborn male of the womb. All firstborn offspring of the livestock you own that are males will be the LORD’s.
“You must redeem every firstborn of a donkey with a flock animal, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. However, you must redeem every firstborn among your sons.
“In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean? ’ say to him, ‘By the strength of his hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
He said, “If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what is right in his sight, pay attention to his commands, and keep all his statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”
“On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.”[fn]
He told them, “This is what the LORD has said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil, and set aside everything left over to be kept until morning.’ ”
“If you do this, and God so directs you, you will be able to endure, and also all these people will be able to go home satisfied.”[fn]
“Now if you will carefully listen to me and keep my covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples, although the whole earth is mine,
“No hand may touch him;[fn] instead he will be stoned or shot with arrows and not live, whether animal or human. When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up the mountain.”
“Make an earthen altar for me, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your flocks and herds. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I cause my name to be remembered.
“If you make a stone altar for me, do not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it.
“When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for six years; then in the seventh he is to leave as a free man[fn] without paying anything.
“If he arrives alone, he is to leave alone; if he arrives with[fn] a wife, his wife is to leave with him.
“If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children belong to her master, and the man must leave alone.
“But if the slave declares, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I do not want to leave as a free man,’
“When a man sells his daughter as a concubine,[fn] she is not to leave as the male slaves do.
“If she is displeasing to her master, who chose her for himself, then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners because he has acted treacherously toward her.
“Or if he chooses her for his son, he must deal with her according to the customary treatment of daughters.
“If he takes an additional wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing, or marital rights of the first wife.
“And if he does not do these three things for her, she may leave free of charge, without any payment.[fn]
“If a person schemes and willfully[fn] acts against his neighbor to murder him, you must take him from my altar to be put to death.
“Whoever kidnaps a person must be put to death, whether he sells him or the person is found in his possession.
“When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or his fist, and the injured man does not die but is confined to bed,
“if he can later get up and walk around outside leaning on his staff, then the one who struck him will be exempt from punishment. Nevertheless, he must pay for his lost work time[fn] and provide for his complete recovery.
“When men get in a fight and hit a pregnant woman so that her children are born prematurely but there is no injury, the one who hit her must be fined as the woman’s husband demands from him, and he must pay according to judicial assessment.
“When a man strikes the eye of his male or female slave and destroys it, he must let the slave go free in compensation for his eye.
“If he knocks out the tooth of his male or female slave, he must let the slave go free in compensation for his tooth.
“When an ox[fn] gores a man or a woman to death, the ox must be stoned, and its meat may not be eaten, but the ox’s owner is innocent.
