TDNT Reference: 2:229,177
Strong's Number G1377 matches the Greek διώκω (diōkō),
which occurs 45 times in 44 verses
in the MGNT Greek.
“Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for [fn]doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].
“Blessed [morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness] are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil things against you because of [your association with] Me.
“When they persecute you in one city [because of your faith in Me], flee to the next; for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“Therefore, take notice, I am sending you prophets and wise men [interpreters, teachers] and scribes [men educated in the Mosaic Law and the writings of the prophets]; some of them you will kill and even crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues, and pursue and persecute from city to city,
“But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake.
What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness [who did not seek salvation and a right relationship with God, nevertheless] obtained righteousness, that is, the righteousness which is produced by faith;
Bless those who persecute you [who cause you harm or hardship]; bless and do not curse [them].
Pursue [this] love [with eagerness, make it your goal], yet earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual gifts [to be used by believers for the benefit of the church], but especially that you may [fn]prophesy [to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people].
You have heard of my career and former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to hunt down and persecute the church of God extensively and [with fanatical zeal] tried [my best] to destroy it.
Not that I have already obtained it [this goal of being Christlike] or have already been made perfect, but I actively press on [fn]so that I may take hold of that [perfection] for which Christ Jesus took hold of me and made me His own.
But as for you, [fn]O man of God, flee from these things; aim at and pursue righteousness [true goodness, moral conformity to the character of God], godliness [the fear of God], faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.
Continually pursue peace with everyone, and the sanctification without which no one will [ever] see the Lord.
“HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM WICKEDNESS AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT.
HE MUST SEARCH FOR PEACE [with God, with self, with others] AND PURSUE IT EAGERLY [actively—not merely desiring it].
