  1. Key Verse – Rom 6:5
    1. Rom 6:6-7 present an exposition of the first half of Rom 6:5
    2. The negative – Dead with Him
    3. Rom 6:8-10 present an exposition of the last half of Rom 6:5
    4. The positive – Alive with Him
  2. Alive with Christ
    1. Future resurrection
    2. Present position – even now we walk in newness of life
    3. The understanding of this truth comes as we learn what happened to Christ in death and resurrection
      1. Death has no dominion over Him
        1. The sting of death is sin
        2. He died because He took our sin
        3. He put Himself under the power of death
        4. He destroyed death – Rom 5:21
        5. He will never die again
      2. Christ was raised from the dead
        1. By the glory of the Father
        2. An announcement that the work of redemption, atonement, justification, reconciliation, and salvation is absolutely completed
      3. The resurrection is the proof; the guarantee, the point of certainly; our point of authority
        1. He lives with God
          1. Exclusively in the realm of God
          2. No longer under sin and death – Phl 2:5-12
        2. He is restored to previous position – Jhn 17:1-3
  3. Summary – Rom 6:1-11
    1. Look exclusively at the Lord Jesus Christ and our position in Him
  4. The Turning Point – Rom 6:11
    1. The realm of application –
      1. Our practice
      2. Our conduct
      3. Our behavior
      4. Our experience
    2. The reckoning – realizing the truth about ourselves
      1. What is true of Christ is true of us – we are joined to Him
      2. Considering ourselves
      3. A logical conclusion
      4. It is not talking ourselves into something
      5. It is the result of truth
      6. It is accepting God’s Word as true
      7. It is counting on that truth
      8. It is putting my life on that truth
    3. We are to know and count on the fact that we are dead to the rule of sin
      1. It does not mean that it is my duty to die to sin
      2. It is not a command for me to die to sin
      3. It does not mean that I believe sin to be eradicated
      4. It does not mean that sin is dead
      5. It does not mean “my reckoning” makes me dead to sin
      6. We are to reckon something about ourselves as true because it is a fact through our union with Christ. He is dead to the realm of sin and alive to the realm of God
      7. No longer under the dominion of death – Jhn 11:25-26
      8. No longer under the dominion of sin
        1. Sin can never make us its slave again
      9. God’s way was not to change the old man but to send it to the cross unto death to release us from it
      10. No one who remains in Adam will be saved
      11. We are released from Adam – New in Christ
    4. We are to believe we are alive unto God – in the realm of the operation of the reign of grace
      1. No longer under the wrath of God – Jhn 3:36
      2. We are now reconciled to God
      3. We are open to all the blessings of God – Rom 5:2
      4. We are the special objects of His concern
      5. We are in God’s plan and purpose to be holy and without blame before Him in love – Eph 1:4
      6. God’s purpose is being worked in our life
        1. Through our union with Christ we have a living, vital, organic attachment to Him
          1. We receive life from Him – Jhn 15:5
          2. We are His body – Eph 4:15
        2. Thru the Spirit of Christ who indwells us
  5. We Are to Believe Our Position – We Do Not Experience Our Position
    1. We have the Word of God
      1. We must believe it
      2. We must submit to it
      3. We must act upon it
    2. We believe our position
      1. We are in grace
      2. God will bring us to perfection
    3. We know we are not hopeless
      1. Our relationship to sin is exactly the same as Christ’s
      2. We are in Him
    4. Our difficulty is in believing
      1. It is too good
      2. We are still in the body
    5. By faith alone we reckon the truth
