The Holy Spirit Lives in the Believer to Produce the New Life

  1. The Basis of the Spirit’s Indwelling – Rom 8:1-4
    1. The accomplishment of the atonement
    2. The means whereby the work was accomplished
      1. The inadequacy of the Law
      2. The adequacy of God
  2. The Evidence of the Spirit’s Indwelling – Rom 8:5-11
    1. The two kinds of people
      1. Those “in the flesh” – self-life
        1. A position – we are not in the flesh, but the flesh is in us – Gal 5:19-21
        2. A practice – dominated by lower nature
      2. Those “in the Spirit” – Christ-life
        1. A position – Gal 5:22-24
        2. A practice – 1Co 2:9-14 – Dominated by the new nature
    2. The two ways of life – Rom 8:6-11

        1. A life of death (separated from God)
        2. A life of hostility against God

          2. The Spirit produces life enabling the believer to live a Godly life

          1. Even the body will be redeemed
          2. The guarantee is the Spirit of life in us now
        4. Its present blessing – life and peace
  3. The Encouragement of the Spirit’s Indwelling – Rom 8:12-17
    1. The new destiny reveals a new life – Rom 8:12-13
      1. There is no obligation to the old nature
      2. The old nature life is death
      3. The new nature life (life in the Spirit) is living
      4. We are the purchase of God
    2. The Holy Spirit brings a new relationship
      1. The Sons of God
      2. Led by the Spirit of God – Pro 3:5, 6
    3. The Holy Spirit convinces the believer of adult sonship – Rom 8:15-17
      1. The spirit of bondage – law
      2. The spirit of adoption – freedom
        1. Sons of age
        2. The right of full heirs
      3. We call God “Father”
      4. We have inner assurance that we are Children of God – “The Witness of the Spirit”
        1. He gives witness to us
        2. His witness is in the Word of God – 1Jo 5:9-13
    4. The Holy Spirit assures the believer of a glorious inheritance – Rom 8:17
      1. The heirs
        1. Christ
        2. Believers
      2. The inheritance
      3. The experience
        1. Suffer together
        2. Glory together
