Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"high, lofty," is used

(a) naturally, of mountains, Mat 4:8; 17:1; Mar 9:2; Rev 21:10; of a wall, Rev 21:12;

(b) figuratively, of the arm of God, Act 13:17; of heaven, "on high," plural, lit., "in high (places)," Hbr 1:3;

(c) metaphorically, Luk 16:15, RV, "exalted" (AV, "highly esteemed"); Rom 11:20, in the best texts, "high-minded" [lit., "mind (not) high things"]; Rom 12:16.

A-2 Adjective Strong's Number: g5310 Greek: hupsistos

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"most high," is a superlative degree, the positive not being in use; it is used of God in Luk 1:32, 35, 76; 6:35, in each of which the RV has "the most High," for AV, "the highest;" AV and RV in Mar 5:7; Luk 8:28; Act 7:48; 16:17; Hbr 7:1.
See HIGHEST (below).

A-3 Adjective Strong's Number: g3173 Greek: megas

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"great," is translated "high" in Jhn 19:31, of the Sabbath day at the Passover season; here the meaning is virtually equivalent to "holy,"
See GREAT.

Note: In Hbr 10:21, the RV rightly has "a great (priest)," AV, "high." For "high places," Eph 6:12, AV, see HEAVENLY, B. No. 2.

B-1 Noun Strong's Number: g5311 Greek: hupsos

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"height," is used with ex (ek) "from," in the phrase "on high," Luk 1:78; 24:49; with eis, "in" or "into," Eph 4:8.
See ESTATE, HEIGHT, No. 1.

B-2 Noun Strong's Number: g5313 Greek: hupsoma

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"high thing," 2Cr 10:5; in Rom 8:39; "height."
See HEIGHT, No. 2.

C-1 Adverb Strong's Number: g507 Greek: ano

High (From On, Most), Highly:

"above, upward," is used in Phl 3:14, of the "high calling of God in Christ Jesus," the prize of which is set before believers as their goal, lit., "calling upward" (RV, marg.), a preferable rendering to "heavenly calling."
See ABOVE.
