signifies, in the Active Voice, "to put in good spirits, to make cheerful" (eu, "well," thumos, "mind or passion"); or, intransitively, "to be cheerful," Act 27:22, 25; Jam 5:13 (RV, "cheerful," for AV, "merry").

"to be of good courage, of good cheer" (tharsos, "courage, confidence"), is used only in the Imperative Mood, in the NT; "be of good cheer," Mat 9:2, 22; 14:27; Mar 6:50; 10:49; Luk 8:48; Jhn 16:33; Act 23:11.

means "of good cheer" (see A, No. 1), Act 27:36.

Cheer, Cheerful, Cheerfully, Cheerfulness:

from hileos, "propitious," signifies that readiness of mind, that joyousness, which is prompt to do anything; hence, "cheerful" (Eng., "hilarious"), 2Cr 9:7, "God loveth a cheerful (hilarious) giver."

Note: In the Sept. the verb hilaruno translates a Hebrew word meaning "to cause to shine," in Psa 104:15.

cheerfully (see A, No. 1), is found in the most authentic mss., in Act 24:10, instead of the comparative degree, euthumoteron.

"cheerfulness" (akin to B, No. 2), is used in Rom 12:8, in connection with showing mercy.
