Joppa, or Japho:
(beauty) now Jaffa, a town on the southwest coast of Palestine, in the portion of Dan (Joshua 19:46). Having a harbor attached to it-though always, as still, a dangerous one-it became the port of Jerusalem in the days of Solomon, and has been ever since. Here Jonah "took ship to flee from the presence of his Maker." Here, on the house‐top of Simon the tanner, "by the seaside," St. Peter had his vision of tolerance (Acts 11:5). The existing town contains about 4,000 inhabitants.
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
