Syrtis, The:
(Acts 27:17) in the Revised Version in place of "quicksands" in the Authorized Version. It was the well‐known Syrtis Major, the terror of all Mediterranean sailors. "It is a dangerous shallow on the coast of Africa, between Tripoli and Barca, southwest of the island of Crete." The other Syrtis Minor, was too far west to be feared by Paul's fellow voyagers.-ED.
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
