Numbers 32 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

(Deu 3:12–22 )

Now the sons^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 and the sons^H1121 of Gad^H1410 had^H1961 a very^H3966 large^H6099 number^H6099 of livestock^H4735. So when they saw^H7200 the land^H776 of Jazer^H3270 and the land^H776 of Gilead^H1568, that [fn]it was indeed^H2009 a place^H4725 suitable^H4725 for livestock^H4735,

Num 32:2

Num 32:2the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,

Num 32:3

Num 32:3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

Num 32:4

Num 32:4the land which the LORD [fn]conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”

Num 32:5

Num 32:5And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as our property; do not take us across the Jordan.”

Num 32:6

But Moses^H4872 said^H559 to the sons^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the sons^H1121 of Reuben^H7205, “Should your brothers^H251 go^H935 to war^H4421 while you remain^H3427 here^H6311?

Num 32:7

Num 32:7“And why are you discouraging the [fn]sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the LORD has given them?

Num 32:8

Num 32:8“This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

Num 32:9

Num 32:9“For when they went up to the [fn]Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the [fn]sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

Num 32:10

Num 32:10“So the LORD’S anger burned on that day, and He swore, saying,

Num 32:11

Num 32:11‘None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,

Num 32:12

Num 32:12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have followed the LORD fully.’

Num 32:13

Num 32:13“So the LORD’S anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the LORD came to an end.

Num 32:14

Num 32:14“Now behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, born of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.

Num 32:15

Num 32:15“For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”

Num 32:16

Then they approached^H5066 him and said^H559, “We will build^H1129 sheepfolds^H6629^H1448 for our livestock^H4735 here^H6311 and cities^H5892 for our little^H2945 ones^H2945;

Num 32:17

Num 32:17but we ourselves will be armed, hurrying ahead of the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

Num 32:18

Num 32:18“We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has gained possession of his inheritance.

Num 32:19

Num 32:19“But we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east.”

Num 32:20

So Moses^H4872 said^H559 to them, “If^H518 you will do^H6213 [fn]this^H2088, if^H518 you will arm^H2502 yourselves before^H6440 the LORD^H3068 for the war^H4421,

Num 32:21

Num 32:21and all of you armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven His enemies out from Him,

Num 32:22

Num 32:22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be [fn]free of obligation toward the LORD and toward Israel, and this land shall be yours as property before the LORD.

Num 32:23

Num 32:23“But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure that your sin will find you out.

Num 32:24

Num 32:24“Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and sheepfolds for your sheep, and do [fn]what you have promised.”

Num 32:25

Then the sons^H1121 of Gad^H1410 and the sons^H1121 of Reuben^H7205 spoke^H559 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559, “Your servants^H5650 will do^H6213 just^H834 as^H834 my lord^H113 commands^H6680.

Num 32:26“Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall [fn]remain there in the cities of Gilead,

Num 32:27

Num 32:27while your servants, that is, everyone who is armed for war, cross over in the presence of the LORD to battle, just as my lord says.”

Num 32:28

So Moses^H4872 gave^H6680 the command^H6680 regarding them to Eleazar^H499 the priest^H3548, to Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, and to the heads^H7218 of the fathers’^H1 households of the tribes^H4294 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

Num 32:29

Num 32:29And Moses said to them, “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as their property;

Num 32:30

Num 32:30but if they do not cross over with you armed, they shall instead be settled among you in the land of Canaan.”

Num 32:31

Num 32:31And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, “As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.

Num 32:32

Num 32:32“We ourselves will cross over armed in the presence of the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance shall remain with us across the Jordan.”

Num 32:33

So Moses^H4872 gave^H5414 to them, to the sons^H1121 of Gad^H1410, the sons^H1121 of Reuben^H7205, and to the half-tribe^H2677^H7626 of Joseph’s^H3130 son^H1121 Manasseh^H4519, the kingdom^H4467 of Sihon^H5511, king^H4428 of the Amorites^H567 and the kingdom^H4467 of Og^H5747, the king^H4428 of Bashan^H1316, the land^H776 with its cities^H5892 with their [fn]territories^H1367, the cities^H5892 of the surrounding^H5439 land^H776.

Num 32:34

Num 32:34And the sons of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,

Num 32:35

Num 32:35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

Num 32:36

Num 32:36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.

Num 32:37

Num 32:37The sons of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,

Num 32:38

Num 32:38Nebo, and Baal-meon—their names being changed—and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built.

Num 32:39

Num 32:39The sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

Num 32:40

Num 32:40So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.

Num 32:41

Num 32:41Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its [fn]towns, and called them [fn]Havvoth-jair.

Num 32:42

Num 32:42Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and named it Nobah, after his own name.
