A Law of Inheritance

Then the daughters^H1323 of Zelophehad^H6765, the son^H1121 of Hepher^H2660, the son^H1121 of Gilead^H1568, the son^H1121 of Machir^H4353, the son^H1121 of Manasseh^H4519, of the families^H4940 of Manasseh^H4519 the son^H1121 of Joseph^H3130, came^H7126 forward^H7126; and these^H428 are the names^H8034 of his daughters^H1323: Mahlah^H4244, Noah^H5270, Hoglah^H2295, Milcah^H4435, and Tirzah^H8656.

Num 27:2

Num 27:2They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying,

Num 27:3

Num 27:3“Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the group of those who gathered together against the LORD, in the group of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and he had no sons.

Num 27:4

Num 27:4“Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family simply because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s brothers.”

Num 27:5

Num 27:5So Moses brought their case before the LORD.

Num 27:6

Then the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to [fn]Moses^H4872,

Num 27:7

Num 27:7“The daughters of Zelophehad are right about their statements. You shall certainly give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them.

Num 27:8

Num 27:8“Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.

Num 27:9

Num 27:9‘And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.

Num 27:10

Num 27:10‘If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

Num 27:11

Num 27:11‘And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall take possession of it; and it shall be a statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the LORD has commanded Moses.’”

Num 27:12

Then the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Go^H5927 up^H5927 to this^H2088 mountain^H2022 of Abarim^H5682, and see^H7200 the land^H776 which^H834 I have given^H5414 to the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

Num 27:13

Num 27:13“When you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother [fn]was;

Num 27:14

Num 27:14for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My [fn]command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Joshua to Succeed Moses

Num 27:15

Then Moses^H4872 spoke^H1696 to the LORD^H3068, saying^H559,

Num 27:16

Num 27:16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of [fn]humanity, appoint a man over the congregation,

Num 27:17

Num 27:17who will go out [fn]and come in before them, and lead them out and [fn]bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”

Num 27:18

Num 27:18So the LORD said to Moses, “[fn]Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;

Num 27:19

Num 27:19and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.

Num 27:20

Num 27:20“And you shall put some of your [fn]authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him.

Num 27:21

Num 27:21“Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his [fn]command they shall go out, and at his [fn]command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.”

Num 27:22

Num 27:22Then Moses did just as the LORD commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.

Num 27:23

Num 27:23Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD had spoken [fn]through Moses.
