The Sin of Peor

While Israel^H3478 remained^H3427 at Shittim^H7851, the people^H5971 began^H2490 to commit^H2181 infidelity^H2181 with the daughters^H1323 of Moab^H4124.

Num 25:2

Num 25:2For they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

Num 25:3

Num 25:3So Israel [fn]became followers of [fn]Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry with Israel.

Num 25:4

Num 25:4And the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and [fn]execute them [fn]in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”

Num 25:5

Num 25:5So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who have [fn]become followers of [fn]Baal of Peor.”

Num 25:6

Then behold^H2009, one^H376 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 came^H935 and brought^H7126 to his relatives^H251 a Midianite^H4084 woman^H4084, in the sight^H5869 of Moses^H4872 and in the sight^H5869 of the whole^H3605 congregation^H5712 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478, while they were weeping^H1058 at the entrance^H6607 of the tent^H168 of meeting^H4150.

Num 25:7

Num 25:7When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,

Num 25:8

Num 25:8and he went after the man of Israel into the inner room of the tent and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through the abdomen. So the plague on the sons of Israel was brought to a halt.

Num 25:9

Num 25:9But those who died from the plague were twenty-four thousand in number.

The Zeal of Phinehas

Num 25:10

Then the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 25:11

Num 25:11“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was [fn]jealous with My [fn]jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My [fn]jealousy.

Num 25:12

Num 25:12“Therefore say, ‘Behold, I am giving him My covenant of peace;

Num 25:13

Num 25:13and it shall be for him and for his [fn]descendants after him, a covenant of a permanent priesthood, because he was [fn]jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.’”

Num 25:14

Now the name^H8034 of the [fn]dead^H5221 man^H376 of Israel^H3478 who^H834 was killed^H5221 with the Midianite^H4084 woman^H4084, was Zimri^H2174 the son^H1121 of Salu^H5543, a leader^H5387 of a father’s^H1 household^H1004 among the Simeonites^H8099.

Num 25:15

Num 25:15And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, [fn]who was head of the people of a father’s household in Midian.

Num 25:16

Then the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872, saying^H559,

Num 25:17

Num 25:17“Be hostile to the Midianites and attack them;

Num 25:18

Num 25:18for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was killed on the day of the plague because of Peor.”
