Numbers 11 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

The People Complain

Now the people^H5971 became^H1961 like those who complain^H596 of adversity^H7451 in the ears^H241 of the LORD^H3068; and the LORD^H3068 heard^H8085 them and His anger^H639 was kindled^H2734, and the fire^H784 of the LORD^H3068 burned^H1197 among them and consumed^H398 some at the outskirts^H7097 of the camp^H4264.

Num 11:2

Num 11:2The people then cried out to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire [fn]died out.

Num 11:3

Num 11:3So that place was named [fn]Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burned among them.

Num 11:4

Now the rabble^H628 who^H834 were among^H7130 them [fn]had^H183 greedy^H183 cravings^H8378; and the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 also^H1571 wept^H1058 again^H7725 and said^H559, “Who^H4310 will give us [fn]meat^H1320 to eat^H398?

Num 11:5

Num 11:5“We remember the fish which we used to eat for free in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic;

Num 11:6

Num 11:6but now our [fn]appetite is gone. There is nothing at all [fn]to look at except this manna!”

Num 11:7

Now the manna^H4478 was like coriander^H1407 seed^H2233, and its appearance^H5869 like that of [fn]bdellium^H916.

Num 11:8

Num 11:8The people would roam about and gather it and grind it [fn]between two millstones, or pound it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make loaves with it; and its taste was like the taste of [fn]cake baked with oil.

Num 11:9

Num 11:9When the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna would come down [fn]with it.

The Complaint of Moses

Num 11:10

Now Moses^H4872 heard^H8085 the people^H5971 weeping^H1058 throughout their families^H4940, each^H376 one^H376 at the entrance^H6607 of his tent^H168; and the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 became^H2734 very^H3966 hot^H2734, and [fn]Moses^H4872 was displeased^H7489^H5869.

Num 11:11

Num 11:11So Moses said to the LORD, “Why have You [fn]been so hard on Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have put the burden of all this people on me?

Num 11:12

Num 11:12“Was it I who conceived all this people? Or did I give birth to them, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them [fn]in your arms, as a [fn]nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which You swore to their fathers’?

Num 11:13

Num 11:13“Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat so that we may eat!’

Num 11:14

Num 11:14“I am not able to carry all this people by myself, because it is too [fn]burdensome for me.

Num 11:15

Num 11:15“So if You are going to deal with me this way, please kill me now, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my misery.”

Seventy Elders to Assist Moses

Num 11:16

The LORD^H3068 therefore said^H559 to Moses^H4872, “Gather^H622 for Me seventy^H7657 men^H376 from the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478, whom^H834 you know^H3045 to be the elders^H2205 of the people^H5971 and their officers^H7860, and bring^H3947 them to the tent^H168 of meeting^H4150, and have them take^H3320 their stand^H3320 there^H8033 with you.

Num 11:17

Num 11:17“Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take away some of the Spirit who is upon you, and put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it by yourself.

Num 11:18

Num 11:18“And you shall say to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, “[fn]Oh that someone would give us meat to eat! For we were well-off in Egypt.” Therefore the LORD will give you meat and you shall eat.

Num 11:19

Num 11:19‘You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days,

Num 11:20

Num 11:20 [fn]but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nose and [fn]makes you nauseated; because you have rejected the LORD who is among you and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”

Num 11:21

Num 11:21But Moses said, “The people, among whom I am included, are six hundred thousand on foot! Yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, so that they may eat for a whole month.’

Num 11:22

Num 11:22“Are flocks and herds to be slaughtered for them, so that it will be sufficient for them? Or are all the fish of the sea to be [fn]caught for them, so that it will be sufficient for them?”

Num 11:23

Num 11:23Then the LORD said to Moses, “Is the LORD’S [fn]power too little? Now you shall see whether My word will [fn]come true for you or not.”

Num 11:24

So Moses^H4872 went^H3318 out^H3318 and told^H1696 the people^H5971 the words^H1697 of the LORD^H3068. He also gathered^H622 seventy^H7657 men^H376 of the elders^H2205 of the people^H5971, and positioned^H5975 them around^H5439 the tent^H168.

Num 11:25

Num 11:25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took away some of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. Yet they did not do it again.

Num 11:26

But two^H8147 men^H376 had remained^H7604 in the camp^H4264; the name^H8034 of the one^H259 was Eldad^H419, and the name^H8034 of the [fn]other^H8145, Medad^H4312. And the Spirit^H7307 rested^H5117 upon them (and they were among those who had been registered^H3789, but had not gone^H3318 out^H3318 to the tent^H168), and they prophesied^H5012 in the camp^H4264.

Num 11:27

Num 11:27So a young man ran and informed Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

Num 11:28

Num 11:28Then Joshua the son of Nun, the personal servant of Moses from his youth, responded and said, “My lord Moses, restrain them!”

Num 11:29

Num 11:29But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? If only all the LORD’S people were prophets, that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!”

Num 11:30

Num 11:30Then Moses [fn]returned to the camp, both he and the elders of Israel.

The Quail and the Plague

Num 11:31

Now a wind^H7307 burst^H5265 forth^H5265 from the LORD^H3068 and it brought^H1468 quail^H7958 from the sea^H3220, and dropped^H5203 them beside^H5921 the camp^H4264, about a day’s^H3117 journey^H1870 on this^H3541 side and a day’s^H3117 journey^H1870 on the other^H3541 side all^H5439 around^H5439 the camp^H4264, and about [fn]two cubits^H520 deep on the surface^H6440 of the ground^H776.

Num 11:32

Num 11:32And the people [fn]spent all that day, all night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quail (the one who gathered least gathered [fn]ten homers) and spread them out for themselves all around the camp.

Num 11:33

Num 11:33While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very severe plague.

Num 11:34

Num 11:34So that place was named [fn]Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had been greedy.

Num 11:35

Num 11:35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people set out for Hazeroth, and they [fn]remained at Hazeroth.
