Laborers in the Vineyard

“For the kingdom^G932 of heaven^G3772 is like^G3664 [fn]a landowner^G3617 who^G3748 went^G1831 out^G1831 early^G260 in the morning^G4404 to hire^G3409 laborers^G2040 for his vineyard^G290.

Mat 20:2

Mat 20:2“When he had agreed with the laborers for a [fn]denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Mat 20:3

Mat 20:3“And he went out about the [fn]third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace;

Mat 20:4

Mat 20:4and to those he said, ‘You go into the vineyard also, and whatever is right, I will give you.’ And so they went.

Mat 20:5

Mat 20:5“Again he went out about the [fn]sixth and the ninth hour, and did [fn]the same thing.

Mat 20:6

Mat 20:6“And about the [fn]eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he *said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day long?’

Mat 20:7

Mat 20:7“They *said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He *said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’

Mat 20:8

“Now^G1161 when evening^G3798 came^G1096, the [fn]owner^G2962 of the vineyard^G290 *said^G3004 to his foreman^G2012, ‘Call^G2564 the laborers^G2040 and pay^G591 them their wages^G3408, starting^G757 with the last^G2078 group to the first^G4413.’

Mat 20:9

Mat 20:9“When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a [fn]denarius.

Mat 20:10

Mat 20:10“And so when those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; [fn]but each of them also received a denarius.

Mat 20:11

Mat 20:11“When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner,

Mat 20:12

Mat 20:12saying, ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day’s work and the scorching heat.’

Mat 20:13

Mat 20:13“But he answered and said to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?

Mat 20:14

Mat 20:14‘Take what is yours and go; but I want to give to this last person the same as to you.

Mat 20:15

Mat 20:15‘Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with what is my own? Or is your eye [fn]envious because I am [fn]generous?’

Mat 20:16

Mat 20:16“So the last shall be first, and the first, last.”

Mat 20:17

As Jesus^G2424 was^G3195 about^G3195 to^G3195 go^G305 up^G305 to Jerusalem^G2414, He took^G3880 the twelve^G1427 disciples aside by themselves^G2398, and on the road^G3598 He said^G3004 to them,

Mat 20:18

Mat 20:18“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be [fn]handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death,

Mat 20:19

Mat 20:19and they will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on the third day He will be raised up.”

Mat 20:20

Then^G5119 the mother^G3384 of the [fn]sons^G5207 of Zebedee^G2199 came^G4334 to [fn]Jesus with her sons^G5207, bowing^G4352 down^G4352 and making^G154 a request^G154 of Him.

Mat 20:21

Mat 20:21And He said to her, “What do you desire?” She *said to Him, “Say that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine shall sit, one at Your right, and one at Your left.”

Mat 20:22

Mat 20:22But Jesus replied, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.”

Mat 20:23

Mat 20:23He *said to them, “My cup you shall drink; but to sit at My right and at My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.”

Mat 20:24

And after hearing^G191 this, the other ten^G1176 disciples became indignant^G23 with the two^G1417 brothers^G80.

Mat 20:25

Mat 20:25But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and [fn]those in high position exercise authority over them.

Mat 20:26

Mat 20:26“It [fn]is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become [fn]prominent among you shall be your servant,

Mat 20:27

Mat 20:27and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave;

Mat 20:28

Mat 20:28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [fn]life as a ransom for many.”

Sight for Those Who Are Blind

(Mar 10:46–52; Luk 18:35–43 )

Mat 20:29

As they were leaving^G1607 Jericho^G2410, a large^G4183 crowd^G3793 followed^G190 Him.

Mat 20:30

Mat 20:30And two people who were blind, sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!”

Mat 20:31

Mat 20:31But the crowd sternly warned them to be quiet; yet they cried out all the more, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

Mat 20:32

Mat 20:32And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

Mat 20:33

Mat 20:33They *said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.”

Mat 20:34

Mat 20:34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.
