Jesus before Pilate

(Mat 27:1, 2, 11–14; Luk 23:1–5; Jhn 18:28–38 )

Early^G2117 in the morning^G4404 the chief^G749 priests^G749 with the elders^G4245, scribes^G1122, and the entire^G3650 [fn]Council^G4892 immediately^G2117 held^G4160 a consultation^G4824; and they bound^G1210 Jesus^G2424 and led^G667 Him away^G667, and turned^G3860 Him over^G3860 to Pilate^G4091.

Mar 15:2

Mar 15:2Pilate questioned Him: “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.”

Mar 15:3

Mar 15:3And the chief priests started accusing Him [fn]of many things.

Mar 15:4

Mar 15:4But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!”

Mar 15:5

Mar 15:5But Jesus said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

Mar 15:6

Mar 15:7

Mar 15:7And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt.

Mar 15:8

Mar 15:8And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

Mar 15:9

Mar 15:9Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”

Mar 15:10

Mar 15:10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

Mar 15:11

Mar 15:11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

Mar 15:12

Mar 15:12And responding again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”

Mar 15:13

Mar 15:13They shouted [fn]back, “Crucify Him!”

Mar 15:14

Mar 15:14But Pilate said to them, “Why, what [fn]evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”

Mar 15:15

Mar 15:15Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

Mar 15:16

Now^G1161 the soldiers^G4757 took^G520 Him away^G520 into the [fn]palace^G833 (that is, the Praetorium^G4232), and they *called^G4779 together^G4779 the whole^G3650 Roman [fn]cohort^G4686.

Mar 15:17

Mar 15:17And they *dressed Him in [fn]purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;

Mar 15:18and they began saluting Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Mar 15:19And they repeatedly beat His head with a [fn]reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.

Mar 15:20And after they had mocked Him, they took the [fn]purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion

Mar 15:23And they tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.

Mar 15:24

Mar 15:24And they *crucified Him, and *divided up His garments among themselves, casting [fn]lots for them to decide [fn]what each man would take.

Mar 15:25

Mar 15:25Now it was the [fn]third hour [fn]when they crucified Him.

Mar 15:26

Mar 15:26The inscription of the charge against Him [fn]read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Mar 15:27

And they *crucified^G4717 two^G1417 [fn]rebels^G3027 with Him, one^G1520 on His right^G1188 and one^G1520 on His left^G2176.

Mar 15:29Those passing by were [fn]hurling abuse at Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

Mar 15:30

Mar 15:30save Yourself by coming down from the cross!”

Mar 15:31

Mar 15:31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; [fn]He cannot save Himself!

Mar 15:32

Mar 15:32“Let this Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

Mar 15:33

Mar 15:34

Mar 15:34At the [fn]ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LEMA SABAKTANEI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

Mar 15:35

Mar 15:35And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!”

Mar 15:36

Mar 15:36And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[fn]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”

Mar 15:37But Jesus let out a loud cry, and [fn]died.

Mar 15:38

Mar 15:38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

Mar 15:39

Mar 15:39And when the centurion, who was standing [fn]right in front of Him, saw that He [fn]died in this way, he said, “Truly this Man was [fn]the Son of God!”

Mar 15:40

Mar 15:41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

Mar 15:43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

Mar 15:44

Mar 15:44Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.

Mar 15:45

Mar 15:45And after learning this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

Mar 15:46

Mar 15:46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

Mar 15:47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.
