Death Plot and Anointing

Mar 14:2

Mar 14:2for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

Mar 14:3

While He was in Bethany^G963 at the home^G3614 of Simon^G4613 [fn]the Leper^G3015, He was reclining^G2621 at the table, and a woman^G1135 came^G2064 with an alabaster^G211 vial^G211 of very^G4185 expensive^G4185 perfume^G3464 of pure^G4101 [fn]nard^G3487. She broke^G4937 the vial^G211 and poured^G2708 the perfume over^G2708 His head^G2776.

Mar 14:4

Mar 14:4But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?

Mar 14:5

Mar 14:5“For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred [fn]denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her.

Mar 14:6

Mar 14:6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me.

Mar 14:7

Mar 14:7“For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

Mar 14:8

Mar 14:8“She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

Mar 14:9

Mar 14:9“Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Mar 14:10

Then^G2532 Judas^G2455 Iscariot^G2469, who^G3588 was one^G1520 of the twelve^G1427, went^G565 off^G565 to the chief^G749 priests^G749 in^G2443 order^G2443 to^G2443 [fn]betray^G3860 Him to them.

Mar 14:11

Mar 14:11They were delighted when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

(Mat 26:17–25; Luk 22:7–13; Jhn 13:21–30 )

Mar 14:12

On the first^G4413 day^G2250 of [fn]Unleavened^G106 Bread^G106, when^G3753 [fn]the Passover^G3957 lamb was being sacrificed^G2380, His disciples^G3101 *said^G3004 to Him, “Where^G4226 do You want^G2309 us to go^G565 and prepare^G2090 for You to eat^G2068 the Passover^G3957?”

Mar 14:13

Mar 14:13And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him;

Mar 14:14

Mar 14:14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’

Mar 14:15

Mar 14:15“And he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.”

Mar 14:16

Mar 14:16The disciples left and came to the city, and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

Mar 14:17

When it was evening^G3798 He *came^G2064 with the twelve^G1427.

Mar 14:18

Mar 14:18And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [fn]betray Me—[fn]one who is eating with Me.”

Mar 14:19

Mar 14:19They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”

Mar 14:20

Mar 14:20But He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl.

Mar 14:21

Mar 14:21“For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man [fn]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [fn]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

(Mat 26:26–29; Luk 22:14–23; 1Co 11:23–26 )

Mar 14:22

While they were eating^G2068, He took^G2983 some bread^G740, and [fn]after a blessing^G2127 He broke^G2806 it, and gave^G1325 it to them, and said^G3004, “Take^G2983 it; this^G3778 is My body^G4983.”

Mar 14:23

Mar 14:23And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

Mar 14:24

Mar 14:24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many.

Mar 14:25

Mar 14:25“Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.”

Mar 14:26

And after singing^G5214 a^G5214 [fn]hymn^G5214, they went^G1831 out^G1831 to the Mount^G3735 of Olives^G1636.

Mar 14:27

And Jesus^G2424 *said^G3004 to them, “You will all^G3956 [fn]fall^G4624 away^G4624, because^G3754 it is written^G1125: ‘I WILL STRIKE^G3960 THE SHEPHERD^G4166, AND THE SHEEP^G4263 WILL BE SCATTERED^G1287.’

Mar 14:28

Mar 14:28“But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”

Mar 14:29

Mar 14:29But Peter said to Him, “Even if they all [fn]fall away, yet I will not!”

Mar 14:30

Mar 14:30And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that [fn]this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.”

Mar 14:31

Mar 14:31But [fn]Peter repeatedly said insistently, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing as well.

Jesus in Gethsemane

(Mat 26:36–46; Luk 22:39–46 )

Mar 14:32

They *came^G2064 to a place^G5564 named^G3686 [fn]Gethsemane^G1068; and He *said^G3004 to His disciples^G3101, “Sit^G2523 here^G5602 until^G2193 I have prayed^G4336.”

Mar 14:33

Mar 14:33And He *took with Him Peter, [fn]James, and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.

Mar 14:34

Mar 14:34And He *said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and [fn]keep watch.”

Mar 14:35

Mar 14:35And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, the hour might [fn]pass Him by.

Mar 14:36

Mar 14:36And He was saying, “Abba! [fn]Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”

Mar 14:37

Mar 14:37And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not [fn]keep watch for one hour?

Mar 14:38

Mar 14:38“[fn]Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Mar 14:39

Mar 14:39And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [fn]words.

Mar 14:40

Mar 14:40And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him.

Mar 14:41

Mar 14:41And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [fn]betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mar 14:42

Mar 14:42“Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Betrayal and Arrest

Mar 14:43

And immediately^G2117, while He was still^G2089 speaking^G2980, Judas^G2455, one^G1520 of the twelve^G1427, *came^G3854 up, [fn]accompanied^G3326^G846 by a crowd^G3793 with swords^G3162 and clubs^G3586 who were from the chief^G749 priests^G749, the scribes^G1122, and the elders^G4245.

Mar 14:44

Mar 14:44Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [fn]under guard.”

Mar 14:45

Mar 14:45And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

Mar 14:46

Mar 14:46And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him.

Mar 14:47

Mar 14:47But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [fn]cut off his ear.

Mar 14:48

Mar 14:48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt?

Mar 14:49

Mar 14:49“Every day I was with you within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled.”

Mar 14:50

Mar 14:50And [fn]His disciples all left Him and fled.

Mar 14:51

A young^G3495 man^G3495 was following^G4870 Him, wearing^G4016 nothing but a linen^G4616 sheet^G4616 over^G1909 his naked^G1131 body; and they *seized^G2902 him.

Mar 14:52

Mar 14:52But he [fn]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

(Mat 26:57–68; Luk 22:66–71; Jhn 18:12–14, 19–24 )

Mar 14:53

They led^G520 Jesus^G2424 away^G520 to the high^G749 priest^G749; and all^G3956 the chief^G749 priests^G749, the elders^G4245, and the scribes^G1122 *gathered^G4905 together^G4905.

Mar 14:54

Mar 14:54And Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [fn]officers and warming himself at the [fn]fire.

Mar 14:55

Mar 14:55Now the chief priests and the entire [fn]Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.

Mar 14:56

Mar 14:56For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.

Mar 14:57

Mar 14:57And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying,

Mar 14:58

Mar 14:58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this [fn]temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.’”

Mar 14:59

Mar 14:59And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.

Mar 14:60

Mar 14:60And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?”

Mar 14:61

Mar 14:61But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, “Are You the [fn]Christ, the Son of [fn]the Blessed One?”

Mar 14:62

Mar 14:62And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Mar 14:63

Mar 14:63Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?

Mar 14:64

Mar 14:64“You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.

Mar 14:65

Mar 14:65And some began to spit on Him, and [fn]to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, “Prophesy!” Then the officers took custody of Him [fn]and slapped Him in the face.

Peter’s Denials

(Mat 26:69–75; Luk 22:54–62; Jhn 18:15–18, 25–27 )

Mar 14:66

And while Peter^G4074 was below^G2736 in the courtyard^G833, one^G1520 of the slave^G3814 women^G3814 of the high^G749 priest^G749 *came^G2064,

Mar 14:67

Mar 14:67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You were with Jesus the Nazarene as well.”

Mar 14:68

Mar 14:68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out onto the [fn]porch.[fn]

Mar 14:69

Mar 14:69The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them!”

Mar 14:70

Mar 14:70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “You really are one of them, for you are a Galilean as well.”

Mar 14:71

Mar 14:71But he began to [fn]curse himself and to swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

Mar 14:72

Mar 14:72And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And [fn]he hurried on and began to weep.
