Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce

(Mat 19:1–9 )

Setting^G450 out^G450 from^G1564 there^G1564, Jesus *went^G2064 to the region^G3725 of Judea^G2449 and beyond^G4008 the Jordan^G2446; crowds^G3793 *gathered^G4848 to Him again^G3825, and, as He was accustomed^G1486, He once^G3825 more^G3825 began to teach^G1321 them.

Mar 10:2

And some Pharisees^G5330 came^G4334 up^G4334 to Jesus, testing^G3985 Him, and began questioning^G1905 Him whether^G1487 it was lawful^G1832 for a man^G435 to [fn]divorce^G630 his wife^G1135.

Mar 10:3

Mar 10:3And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”

Mar 10:4

Mar 10:4They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a [fn]certificate of divorce and [fn]send his wife away.”

Mar 10:5

Mar 10:5But Jesus said to them, “[fn]Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

Mar 10:6

Mar 10:6“But from the beginning of creation, God CREATED THEM MALE AND FEMALE.

Mar 10:7

Mar 10:7“FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER[fn],

Mar 10:8

Mar 10:8AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Mar 10:9

Mar 10:9“Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”

Mar 10:10

And in the house^G3614 the disciples^G3101 again^G3825 began questioning^G1905 Him about^G4012 this^G3778.

Mar 10:11

Mar 10:11And He *said to them, “Whoever [fn]divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;

Mar 10:12

Mar 10:12and if she herself [fn]divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

(Mat 19:13–15; Luk 18:15–17 )

Mar 10:13

And they were bringing^G4374 children^G3813 to Him so^G2443 that^G2443 He would touch^G681 them; but the disciples^G3101 rebuked^G2008 them.

Mar 10:14

Mar 10:14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Allow the children to come to Me; do not [fn]forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Mar 10:15

Mar 10:15“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

Mar 10:16

Mar 10:16And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

Mar 10:17

As He was setting^G1607 out^G1607 on a journey^G3598, a man^G1520 ran^G4370 up^G4370 to Him and knelt^G1120 before^G1120 Him, and asked^G1905 Him, “Good^G18 Teacher^G1320, what^G5101 shall I do^G4160 so^G2443 that^G2443 I may inherit^G2816 eternal^G166 life^G2222?”

Mar 10:18

Mar 10:18But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

Mar 10:19

Mar 10:19“You know the commandments: ‘DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT GIVE FALSE TESTIMONY, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.’”

Mar 10:20

Mar 10:20And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth.”

Mar 10:21

Mar 10:21Looking at him, Jesus showed love to him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Mar 10:22

Mar 10:22But he [fn]was deeply dismayed by [fn]these words, and he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

Mar 10:23

And Jesus^G2424, looking^G4017 around^G4017, *said^G3004 to His disciples^G3101, “How^G4459 hard^G1423 it will be for those^G3588 who are wealthy^G5536 to enter^G1525 the kingdom^G932 of God^G2316!”

Mar 10:24

Mar 10:24And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus responded again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

Mar 10:25

Mar 10:25“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

Mar 10:26

Mar 10:26And they were even more astonished, and said to Him, “[fn]Then who can be saved?”

Mar 10:27

Mar 10:27Looking at them, Jesus *said, “With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

Mar 10:28

Peter^G4074 began^G757 to say^G3004 to Him, “Behold^G2400, we have left^G863 everything^G3956 and have followed^G190 You.”

Mar 10:29

Mar 10:29Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,

Mar 10:30

Mar 10:30[fn]but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in [fn]the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.

Mar 10:31

Mar 10:31“But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

Mar 10:32

Now^G1161 they were on the road^G3598 going^G305 up^G305 to Jerusalem^G2414, and Jesus^G2424 was walking^G4254 on ahead^G4254 of them; and they were amazed^G2284, and those^G3588 who followed^G190 were^G5399 fearful^G5399. Mar 10:33

Mar 10:33saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be [fn]handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will [fn]hand Him over to the Gentiles.

Mar 10:34

Mar 10:34“And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

Mar 10:35

[fn]James^G2385 and John^G2491, the two^G1417 sons^G5207 of Zebedee^G2199, *came^G4365 up^G4365 to [fn]Jesus, saying^G3004 to Him, “Teacher^G1320, we want^G2309 You to do^G4160 for us whatever^G3739^G1437 we ask^G154 of You.”

Mar 10:36

Mar 10:36And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

Mar 10:37

Mar 10:37They said to Him, “[fn]Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.”

Mar 10:38

Mar 10:38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”

Mar 10:39

Mar 10:39They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

Mar 10:40

Mar 10:40“But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

Mar 10:41

Hearing^G191 this, the other ten^G1176 began^G757 to feel^G23 indignant^G23 with [fn]James^G2385 and John^G2491.

Mar 10:42

Mar 10:42Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their [fn]people in high position exercise authority over them.

Mar 10:43

Mar 10:43“But it is not this way among you; rather, whoever wants to become [fn]prominent among you shall be your servant;

Mar 10:44

Mar 10:44and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all.

Mar 10:45

Mar 10:45“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [fn]life as a ransom for many.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

(Mat 20:29–34; Luk 18:35–43 )

Mar 10:46

Then^G2532 they *came^G2064 to Jericho^G2410. And later, as He was leaving^G1607 Jericho^G2410 with His disciples^G3101 and a large^G2425 crowd^G3793, a beggar^G6075 who was blind^G5185 named Bartimaeus^G924, the son^G5207 of Timaeus^G5090, was sitting^G2521 by the road^G3598.

Mar 10:47

Mar 10:47And when he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Mar 10:48

Mar 10:48Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Mar 10:49

Mar 10:49And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.”

Mar 10:50

Mar 10:50And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.

Mar 10:51

Mar 10:51And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “[fn]Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!”

Mar 10:52

Mar 10:52And Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has [fn]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
