Jesus before Pilate

(Mat 27:1, 2, 11–14; Mar 15:1–5; Jhn 18:28–38 )

Then^G2532 the entire^G537 assembly^G4128 of them set^G450 out^G450 and brought^G71 Him before^G1909 Pilate^G4091.

Luk 23:2And they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this Man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is [fn]Christ, a King.”

Luk 23:3

Luk 23:3Now Pilate asked Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “It is as you say.”

Luk 23:4

Luk 23:4But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds for charges in the case of this Man.”

Luk 23:5

Luk 23:5But they kept on insisting, saying, “He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

Luk 23:6

Now^G1161 when Pilate^G4091 heard^G191 this, he asked^G1905 whether^G1487 the Man^G444 was a Galilean^G1057.

Luk 23:7

Luk 23:7And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, [fn]since he also was in Jerusalem [fn]at this time.

Jesus before Herod

Luk 23:8

Now^G1161 Herod^G2264 was overjoyed^G3029^G5463 when he saw^G3708 Jesus^G2424; for he had^G1510 wanted^G2309 to see^G3708 Him for a long^G2425 time^G5550, because^G1223 he had been hearing^G191 about^G4012 Him and was hoping^G1679 to see^G3708 some^G5100 [fn]sign^G4592 performed^G1096 by Him.

Luk 23:9

Luk 23:9And he questioned Him [fn]at some length; but He offered him no answer at all.

Luk 23:10

Luk 23:10Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him.

Luk 23:11

Luk 23:11And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, dressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

Luk 23:12

Luk 23:12And so Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

(Mat 27:15–26; Mar 15:6–15; Jhn 18:38—19:16 )

Luk 23:13

Now^G1161 Pilate^G4091 summoned^G4779 to himself the chief^G749 priests^G749, the [fn]rulers^G758, and the people^G2992,

Luk 23:14

Luk 23:14and he said to them, “You brought this Man to me on the ground that He is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have found no basis at all in the case of this Man for the charges which you are bringing against Him.

Luk 23:15

Luk 23:15“No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.

Luk 23:16

Luk 23:16“Therefore I will [fn]punish Him and release Him.”

Luk 23:17

Luk 23:17[[fn]Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

Luk 23:18

But they cried^G349 out^G349 all^G3826 together^G3826, saying^G3004, “Away^G142 with this^G3778 Man^G3778, and release^G630 to us Barabbas^G912!”

Luk 23:19

Luk 23:19(He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.)

Luk 23:20

Luk 23:20But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,

Luk 23:21

Luk 23:21but they kept on crying out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!”

Luk 23:22

Luk 23:22And he said to them a third time, “Why, what has this Man done wrong? I have found [fn]in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will [fn]punish Him and release Him.”

Luk 23:23

Luk 23:23But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.

Luk 23:24

Luk 23:24And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out.

Luk 23:25

Luk 23:25And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.

Simon Carries the Cross

Luk 23:26

And when^G5613 they led^G520 Him away^G520, they seized^G1949 a man^G5100, Simon^G4613 of^G2956 Cyrene^G2956, as he was coming^G2064 in from the country^G68, and placed^G2007 on^G2007 him the cross^G4716 to carry^G5342 behind^G3693 Jesus^G2424.

Luk 23:27

Now^G1161 following^G190 Him was a large^G4183 crowd^G4128 of the people^G2992, and of women^G1135 who^G3739 were [fn]mourning^G2875 and grieving^G2354 for Him.

Luk 23:28

Luk 23:28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

Luk 23:29

Luk 23:29“For behold, days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.’

Luk 23:30

Luk 23:30“Then they will begin TO SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, ‘FALL ON US,’ AND TO THE HILLS, ‘COVER US.’

Luk 23:31

Luk 23:31“For if they do these things [fn]when the tree is green, what will happen [fn]when it is dry?”

Luk 23:32

Now^G1161 two^G1417 others^G2087, who were criminals^G2557, were also^G2532 being led^G71 away^G71 to be put^G337 to^G337 death^G337 with Him.

The Crucifixion

Luk 23:33

And when^G3753 they came^G2064 to the place^G5117 called^G2564 [fn]The Skull^G2898, there^G1563 they crucified^G4717 Him and the criminals^G2557, one^G3739 on the right^G1188 and the other^G3739 on the left^G710.

Luk 23:34

Luk 23:34[[fn]But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”] And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves.

Luk 23:35

Luk 23:35And the people stood by, watching. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the [fn]Christ of God, His Chosen One.”

Luk 23:36

Luk 23:36The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine,

Luk 23:37

Luk 23:37and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

Luk 23:38

Luk 23:38Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Luk 23:39

One^G1520 of the criminals^G2557 who were hanged^G2910 there was [fn]hurling^G987 abuse^G987 at Him, saying^G3004, “Are You not the [fn]Christ^G5547? Save^G4982 Yourself^G4572 and us!”

Luk 23:40

Luk 23:40But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

Luk 23:41

Luk 23:41“And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving [fn]what we deserve for our crimes; but this Man has done nothing wrong.”

Luk 23:42

Luk 23:42And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

Luk 23:43

Luk 23:43And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

Luk 23:44

Luk 23:45

Luk 23:45 [fn]because the sun stopped shining; and the veil of the temple was torn [fn]in two.

Luk 23:46

Luk 23:46And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I ENTRUST MY SPIRIT.” And having said this, He [fn]died.

Luk 23:47

Luk 23:47Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, “This Man was in fact [fn]innocent.”

Luk 23:48

Luk 23:48And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, [fn]beating their chests.

Luk 23:49

Luk 23:49And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

Luk 23:51

Luk 23:51(he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God—

Luk 23:52

Luk 23:52this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Luk 23:53

Luk 23:53And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.

Luk 23:54

Luk 23:54It was a [fn]preparation day, and a Sabbath was about to [fn]begin.

Luk 23:55

Luk 23:55Now the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

Luk 23:56

Luk 23:56And then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.
