The Conquest of Ai

Now the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to Joshua^H3091, “Do not fear^H3372 or be dismayed^H2865. Take^H3947 all^H3605 the people^H5971 of war^H4421 with you. Arise^H6965, go^H5927 up^H5927 to Ai^H5857; see^H7200, I have handed^H5414^H3027 over^H5414 to you the king^H4428 of Ai^H5857, his people^H5971, his city^H5892, and his land^H776.

Jos 8:2

Jos 8:2“You shall do to Ai and its king just as you did to Jericho and its king; you shall take only its spoils and its cattle as plunder for yourselves. [fn]Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

Jos 8:3

So Joshua^H3091 rose^H6965 up^H6965 with all^H3605 the people^H5971 of war^H4421 to go^H5927 up^H5927 to Ai^H5857; and Joshua^H3091 chose^H977 thirty^H7970 thousand^H505 men^H376, valiant^H2428 warriors^H1368, and sent^H7971 them out^H7971 at night^H3915.

Jos 8:4

Jos 8:4He commanded them, saying, “See, you are going to ambush the city from behind [fn]it. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

Jos 8:5

Jos 8:5“Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out to meet us as they did the first time, we will flee before them.

Jos 8:6

Jos 8:6“They will come out after us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us just as they did the first time.’ So we will flee before them.

Jos 8:7

Jos 8:7“Then you shall rise from your ambush and take possession of the city, for the LORD your God will hand it over to you.

Jos 8:8

Jos 8:8“Then it will be when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do it in accordance with the word of the LORD. See, I have commanded you.”

Jos 8:9

Jos 8:9So Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua spent that night among the people.

Jos 8:10

Now Joshua^H3091 got^H7925 up^H7925 early^H7925 in the morning^H1242 and mustered^H6485 the people^H5971, and he went^H5927 up^H5927 with the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478 before^H6440 the people^H5971 to Ai^H5857.

Jos 8:11

Jos 8:11Then all the people of war who were with him went up and approached, and arrived in front of the city; and they camped on the north side of Ai. And there was a valley between him and Ai.

Jos 8:12

Jos 8:12Then he took about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the [fn]city.

Jos 8:13

Jos 8:13So they stationed the people, all the army that was on the north side of the city, and its rear guard on the west side of the city, and Joshua spent that night in the midst of the valley.

Jos 8:14

Jos 8:14And it came about, when the king of Ai saw them, that the men of the city hurried and got up early, and went out to meet Israel in battle, he and all his people at the appointed place before the desert plain. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

Jos 8:15

Jos 8:15Then Joshua and all Israel [fn]pretended to be defeated before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

Jos 8:16

Jos 8:16And all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away from the city.

Jos 8:17

Jos 8:17So not a man was left in Ai or Bethel, [fn]but they had all gone out after Israel, and they left the city [fn]unguarded and pursued Israel.

Jos 8:18

Then the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to Joshua^H3091, “Reach^H5186 out^H5186 with the sword^H3591 that is in your hand^H3027 toward^H413 Ai^H5857, for I will hand^H5414^H3027 it over^H5414 to you.” So Joshua^H3091 reached^H5186 out^H5186 with the sword^H3591 that was in his hand^H3027 toward^H413 the city^H5892.

Jos 8:19

Jos 8:19Then the men in ambush rose quickly from their place, and when he had reached out with his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it, and they quickly set the city on fire.

Jos 8:20

Jos 8:20When the men of Ai turned [fn]back and looked, behold, the smoke of the city ascended to the sky, and they had no place to flee this way or that, for the people who had been fleeing to the wilderness turned against the pursuers.

Jos 8:21

Jos 8:21When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and [fn]killed the men of Ai.

Jos 8:22

Jos 8:22 [fn]The others came out from the city to confront them, so that they were trapped in the midst of Israel, [fn]some on this side and some on that side; and they [fn]killed them until there was not one [fn]left who escaped or survived.

Jos 8:23

Jos 8:23But they captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

Jos 8:24

Now when Israel^H3478 had finished^H3615 killing^H2026 all^H3605 the inhabitants^H3427 of Ai^H5857 in the field^H7704 in the wilderness^H4057 where^H834 they pursued^H7291 them, and all^H3605 of them had fallen^H5307 by the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719 until^H5704 they were destroyed^H8552, then all^H3605 Israel^H3478 returned^H7725 to Ai^H5857 and struck^H5221 it with the edge^H6310 of the sword^H2719.

Jos 8:25

Jos 8:25So all who fell that day, both men and women, were twelve thousand—all the [fn]people of Ai.

Jos 8:26

Jos 8:26For Joshua did not withdraw his hand with which he reached out with the sword until he had [fn]utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

Jos 8:27

Jos 8:27Israel took only the cattle and the spoils of that city as plunder for themselves, in accordance with the word of the LORD which He had commanded Joshua.

Jos 8:28

Jos 8:28So Joshua burned Ai and made it a refuse heap forever, a desolation until this day.

Jos 8:29

Jos 8:29And he hanged the king of Ai on [fn]a tree until evening; but at sunset Joshua gave the command and they took his body down from [fn]the tree and threw it at the entrance of the city gate, and erected over it a large heap of stones that stands to this day.

Jos 8:30

Then^H227 Joshua^H3091 built^H1129 an altar^H4196 to the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478, on Mount^H2022 Ebal^H5858,

Jos 8:31

Jos 8:31just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones on which no one had wielded an iron tool; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

Jos 8:32

Jos 8:32And he wrote there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which [fn]he had written, in the presence of the sons of Israel.

Jos 8:33

Jos 8:33And all Israel with their elders, officers, and their judges were standing on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, the stranger as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at first to bless the people of Israel.

Jos 8:34

Jos 8:34Then afterward he read all the words of the Law, the blessing and the curse, according to everything that is written in the Book of the Law.

Jos 8:35

Jos 8:35There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel with the women, the little ones, and the strangers who were [fn]living among them.
