Israel Is Defeated at Ai

But the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 acted^H4603 unfaithfully^H4603^H4604 regarding the things^H2764 designated^H2764 for^H2764 destruction^H2764, for Achan^H5912, the son^H1121 of Carmi^H3756, the son^H1121 of Zabdi^H2067, the son^H1121 of Zerah^H2226, from the tribe^H4294 of Judah^H3063, took^H3947 some^H4480 of the designated^H2764 things^H2764; therefore the anger^H639 of the LORD^H3068 burned^H2734 against the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478.

Jos 7:2

Now Joshua^H3091 sent^H7971 men^H376 from Jericho^H3405 to Ai^H5857, which^H834 is near^H5973 Beth-aven^H1007, east^H6924 of Bethel^H1008, and said^H559 to them, “[fn]Go^H5927 up^H5927 and spy^H7270 out^H7270 the land^H776.” So the men^H376 went^H5927 up^H5927 and spied^H7270 out^H7270 Ai^H5857.

Jos 7:3

Jos 7:3Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up; have only about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not trouble all the people there, for they are few.”

Jos 7:4

Jos 7:4So about three thousand men from the people went up there, but they fled [fn]from the men of Ai.

Jos 7:5

Jos 7:5And the men of Ai struck and killed about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them [fn]from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them on the mountainside; and the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

Jos 7:6

Then Joshua^H3091 tore^H7167 his clothes^H8071 and fell^H5307 to the ground^H776 on his face^H6440 before^H6440 the ark^H727 of the LORD^H3068 until^H5704 the evening^H6153, both he and the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478; and they put^H5927 dust^H6083 on their heads^H7218.

Jos 7:7

Jos 7:7And Joshua said, “Oh, Lord [fn]GOD! Why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan, only to hand us over to the Amorites, to eliminate us? If only we had been willing [fn]to live beyond the Jordan!

Jos 7:8

Jos 7:8“O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their [fn]back before their enemies?

Jos 7:9

Jos 7:9“For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear about it, and they will surround us and eliminate our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name?”

Jos 7:10

So the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to Joshua^H3091, “Stand^H6965 up^H6965! Why^H4100 is it that you have fallen^H5307 on your face^H6440?

Jos 7:11

Jos 7:11“Israel has sinned, and they have also violated My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things designated for destruction, and have both stolen and kept it a secret. Furthermore, they have also put them among their own things.

Jos 7:12

Jos 7:12“Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their [fn]backs before their enemies, because they have become designated for destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you eliminate from your midst the things designated for destruction.

Jos 7:13

Jos 7:13“Stand up! Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the LORD, the God of Israel, has said this: “There are things designated for destruction in your midst, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you have removed the designated things from your midst.”

Jos 7:14

Jos 7:14‘So in the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the LORD selects by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the LORD selects shall come forward by households, and the household which the LORD selects shall come forward man by man.

Jos 7:15

Jos 7:15‘And it shall be that the one who is selected with the things designated for destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has violated the covenant of the LORD, and because he has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

The Sin of Achan

Jos 7:16

So Joshua^H3091 got^H7925 up^H7925 early^H7925 in the morning^H1242 and brought^H7126 Israel^H3478 forward^H7126 by [fn]tribes^H7626, and the tribe^H7626 of Judah^H3063 was selected^H3920.

Jos 7:17

Jos 7:17So he brought the family of Judah forward, and he selected the family of the Zerahites; then he brought the family of the Zerahites forward man by man, and Zabdi was selected.

Jos 7:18

Jos 7:18And he brought his household forward man by man; and Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected.

Jos 7:19

Jos 7:19Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.”

Jos 7:20

Jos 7:20So Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and [fn]this is what I did:

Jos 7:21

Jos 7:21when I saw among the spoils a beautiful robe from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I wanted them and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

Jos 7:22

So Joshua^H3091 sent^H7971 messengers^H4397, and they ran^H7323 to the tent^H168; and behold^H2009, it was hidden^H2934 in his tent^H168 with the silver^H3701 underneath^H8478 it.

Jos 7:23

Jos 7:23So they took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel; and they [fn]laid them out before the LORD.

Jos 7:24

Jos 7:24Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his [fn]oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to the Valley of [fn]Achor.

Jos 7:25

Jos 7:25And Joshua said, “Why have you brought disaster on us? The LORD will bring disaster on you this day.” And all Israel stoned [fn]them with stones; and they burned them with fire [fn]after they had stoned them with stones.

Jos 7:26

Jos 7:26Then they erected over him a large heap of stones that stands to this day, and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of [fn]Achor to this day.
