Memorial Stones from the Jordan

Now when^H834 the entire^H3605 nation^H1471 had finished^H8552 crossing^H5674 the Jordan^H3383, the LORD^H3068 spoke^H559 to Joshua^H3091, saying^H559,

Jos 4:2

Jos 4:2“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe,

Jos 4:3

Jos 4:3and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firmly, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the encampment where you will spend the night.’”

Jos 4:4

Jos 4:4So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe;

Jos 4:5

Jos 4:5and Joshua said to them, “[fn]Cross again to the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.

Jos 4:6

Jos 4:6“[fn]This shall be a sign among you; when your children ask [fn]later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’

Jos 4:7

Jos 4:7then you shall say to them, ‘That the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.’ So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of Israel forever.”

Jos 4:8

So the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213 exactly^H3651 as Joshua^H3091 commanded^H6680, and took^H5375 up^H5375 twelve^H8147^H6240 stones^H68 from the middle^H8432 of the Jordan^H3383, just^H834 as^H834 the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Joshua^H3091, according to the number^H4557 of the tribes^H7626 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478; and they carried^H5674 them over^H5674 with them to the encampment^H4411 and put^H5117 them down^H5117 there^H8033.

Jos 4:9

Jos 4:9Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.

Jos 4:10

Jos 4:10For the priests who carried the ark were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything was completed that the LORD had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hurried and crossed;

Jos 4:11

Jos 4:11and when all the people had finished crossing, then the ark of the LORD and the priests crossed in front of the people.

Jos 4:12

Jos 4:12The sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle formation before the sons of Israel, just as Moses had spoken to them;

Jos 4:13

Jos 4:13about forty thousand equipped for war, crossed for battle before the LORD to the desert plains of Jericho.

Jos 4:14

On that day^H3117 the LORD^H3068 exalted^H1431 Joshua^H3091 in the sight^H5869 of all^H3605 Israel^H3478, so that they [fn]revered^H3372 him, just^H834 as^H834 they had [fn]revered^H3372 Moses^H4872 all^H3605 the days^H3117 of his life^H2416.

Jos 4:15

Now the LORD^H3068 said^H559 to [fn]Joshua^H3091,

Jos 4:16

Jos 4:16“Command the priests who carry the ark of the testimony that they come up from the Jordan.”

Jos 4:17

Jos 4:17So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.”

Jos 4:18

Jos 4:18It came about when the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were [fn]lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks as before.

Jos 4:19

Now the people^H5971 came^H5927 up^H5927 from the Jordan^H3383 on the tenth^H6218 of the first^H7223 month^H2320 and camped^H2583 at Gilgal^H1537, on the eastern^H4217 edge^H7097 of Jericho^H3405.

Jos 4:20

Jos 4:20As for [fn]those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set them up at Gilgal.

Jos 4:21

Jos 4:21And he said to the sons of [fn]Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’

Jos 4:22

Jos 4:22then you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’

Jos 4:23

Jos 4:23“For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the LORD your God had done to the [fn]Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed;

Jos 4:24

Jos 4:24so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, so that you may [fn]fear the LORD your God [fn]forever.”
