Then Joshua^H3091 gathered^H622 all^H3605 the tribes^H7626 of Israel^H3478 at Shechem^H7927, and called^H7121 for the elders^H2205 of Israel^H3478, their heads^H7218, their judges^H8199, and their officers^H7860; and they presented^H3320 themselves before^H6440 God^H430.

Jos 24:2

Jos 24:2Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘From ancient times your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates River, namely, Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods.

Jos 24:3

Jos 24:3‘Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his [fn]descendants and gave him Isaac.

Jos 24:4

Jos 24:4‘To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and to Esau I gave Mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

Jos 24:5

Jos 24:5‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt [fn]by what I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out.

Jos 24:6

Jos 24:6‘So I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea; and Egypt pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the [fn]Red Sea.

Jos 24:7

Jos 24:7‘But when they cried out to the LORD, He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them and covered them; and your own eyes saw what I did in Egypt. And you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

Jos 24:8

Jos 24:8‘Then I brought you into the land of the Amorites, who lived beyond the Jordan, and they fought with you; but I handed them over to you, and you took possession of their land when I eliminated them before you.

Jos 24:9

Jos 24:9‘Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, rose up and fought against Israel, and he sent messengers and summoned Balaam the son of Beor to curse you.

Jos 24:10

Jos 24:10‘But I was not willing to listen to Balaam. So he had to bless you, and I saved you from his hand.

Jos 24:11

Jos 24:11‘You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho; and the citizens of Jericho fought against you, and the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Therefore I handed them over to you.

Jos 24:12

Jos 24:12‘Then I sent the hornet before you and it [fn]drove out the two kings of the Amorites from you—not by your sword nor your bow.

Jos 24:13

Jos 24:13‘And I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you have lived in them; you are eating of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.’

“We Will Serve the LORD”

Jos 24:14

“Now^H6258, therefore, [fn]fear^H3372 the LORD^H3068 and serve^H5647 Him in sincerity^H8549 and [fn]truth^H571; and do^H5493 away^H5493 with the gods^H430 which^H834 your fathers^H1 served^H5647 beyond^H5676 the Euphrates River^H5104 and in Egypt^H4714, and serve^H5647 the LORD^H3068.

Jos 24:15

Jos 24:15“But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Jos 24:16

The people^H5971 answered^H6030 and said^H559, “Far^H2486 be it from us that we would abandon^H5800 the LORD^H3068 to serve^H5647 other^H312 gods^H430;

Jos 24:17

Jos 24:17for the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves, and did these great signs in our sight and watched over us through all the way in which we went and among all the peoples through whose midst we passed.

Jos 24:18

Jos 24:18“The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.”

Jos 24:19

Then Joshua^H3091 said^H559 to the people^H5971, “You will not be^H3201 able^H3201 to serve^H5647 the LORD^H3068, for He is a holy^H6918 God^H430. He is a jealous^H7072 God^H410; He will not forgive^H5375 your wrongdoing^H6588 or your sins^H2403.

Jos 24:20

Jos 24:20“If you abandon the LORD and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and destroy you after He has done good to you.”

Jos 24:21

Jos 24:21And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD.”

Jos 24:22

Jos 24:22So Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves the LORD, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.”

Jos 24:23

Jos 24:23“Now then, do away with the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

Jos 24:24

Jos 24:24And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and [fn]obey His voice.”

Jos 24:25

Jos 24:25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

Jos 24:26

Jos 24:26And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God; and he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

Jos 24:27

Jos 24:27Then Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, because it has heard all the words of the LORD which He spoke [fn]to us; so it shall be a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.”

Jos 24:28

Jos 24:28Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

Jos 24:29

Now it came^H1961 about^H1961 after^H310 these^H428 things^H1697 that Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, the servant^H5650 of the LORD^H3068, died^H4191, being 110^H3967^H6235 years^H8141 old^H1121.

Jos 24:30

Jos 24:30And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of Mount Gaash.

Jos 24:31

Israel^H3478 served^H5647 the LORD^H3068 all^H3605 the days^H3117 of Joshua^H3091 and all^H3605 the days^H3117 of the elders^H2205 who^H834 [fn]survived^H748^H3117^H310 Joshua^H3091, and had known^H3045 every^H3605 deed^H4639 of the LORD^H3068 which^H834 He had done^H6213 for Israel^H3478.

Jos 24:32

Now they buried^H6912 the bones^H6106 of Joseph^H3130, which^H834 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 brought^H5927 up^H5927 from Egypt^H4714, at Shechem^H7927, in the plot^H2513 of land^H7704 which^H834 Jacob^H3290 had bought^H7069 from the sons^H1121 of Hamor^H2544 the father^H1 of Shechem^H7927 for a hundred^H3967 [fn]pieces^H7192 of^H7192 money^H7192; and they became^H1961 the inheritance^H5159 of Joseph’s^H3130 sons^H1121.

Jos 24:33

Jos 24:33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which was given to him in the hill country of Ephraim.
