Six Cities of Refuge

(Num 35:9–28; Deu 19:1–13 )

Then the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Joshua^H3091, saying^H559,

Jos 20:2“Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘[fn]Designate the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you [fn]through Moses,

Jos 20:3

Jos 20:3so that one who commits manslaughter by [fn]killing a person unintentionally, without premeditation, may flee there, and they shall become your refuge from the avenger of blood.

Jos 20:4

Jos 20:4‘Then he shall flee to one of these cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and state his case in the [fn]presence of the elders of that city; and they shall [fn]receive him into the city to them and give him a place, so that he may remain among them.

Jos 20:5

Jos 20:5‘Now if the avenger of blood pursues him, then they are not to hand the one who committed manslaughter over to him, since he struck his neighbor without premeditation and did not hate him previously.

Jos 20:6

Jos 20:6‘And he shall remain in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the one who is high priest in those days. Then [fn]he shall [fn]return to his own city and to his own house, to the city from which he fled.’”

Jos 20:7

So they [fn]set^H6942 apart^H6942 Kedesh^H6943 in [fn]Galilee^H1551 in the hill^H2022 country^H2022 of Naphtali^H5321, and Shechem^H7927 in the hill^H2022 country^H2022 of Ephraim^H669, and Kiriath-arba^H7153 (that is, Hebron^H2275) in the hill^H2022 country^H2022 of Judah^H3063.

Jos 20:8

Jos 20:8And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they [fn]designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plain from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Manasseh.

Jos 20:9

Jos 20:9These were the designated cities for all the sons of Israel and for the stranger who resides among them, so that whoever [fn]kills a person unintentionally may flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood until he stands before the congregation.
