Rahab Shelters Spies

(Heb 11:31 )

Then Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126 sent^H7971 two^H8147 men^H376 as spies^H7270 secretly^H2791 from Shittim^H7851, saying^H559, “Go^H1980, view^H7200 the land^H776, especially^H853 Jericho^H3405.” So they went^H1980 and entered^H935 the house^H1004 of a prostitute^H2181 whose name^H8034 was Rahab^H7343, and rested^H7901 there^H8033.

Jos 2:2

Jos 2:2But it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men from the sons of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”

Jos 2:3

Jos 2:3And the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out all the land.”

Jos 2:4

Jos 2:4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them, and she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.

Jos 2:5

Jos 2:5“It came about, when it was time to shut the gate at dark, that the men went out; I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”

Jos 2:6

Jos 2:6But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them in the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof.

Jos 2:7

Jos 2:7So the men pursued them on the road to the Jordan, to the crossing places; and as soon as those who were pursuing them had gone out, they shut the gate.

Jos 2:8

Now before^H2962 [fn]the spies lay^H7901 down^H7901, she came^H5927 up^H5927 to them on the roof^H1406,

Jos 2:9

Jos 2:9and said to the men, “I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of you.

Jos 2:10

Jos 2:10“For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the [fn]Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you [fn]utterly destroyed.

Jos 2:11

Jos 2:11“When we heard these reports, our hearts melted and no [fn]courage remained in anyone any longer because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth below.

Jos 2:12

Jos 2:12“Now then, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s household, and give me a pledge of [fn]truth,

Jos 2:13

Jos 2:13and [fn]spare my father and my mother, and my brothers and my sisters, and all who belong to them, and save our [fn]lives from death.”

Jos 2:14

Jos 2:14So the men said to her, “Our [fn]life [fn]for yours if you do not tell this business of ours; and it shall come about when the LORD gives us the land that we will deal kindly and [fn]faithfully with you.”

The Promise to Rahab

Jos 2:15

Then she let^H3381 them down^H3381 by a rope^H2256 through^H1157 the window^H2474, for her house^H1004 was on the city^H7023 wall^H2346, so that she was living^H3427 on the wall^H2346.

Jos 2:16

Jos 2:16And she said to them, “Go to the hill country, so that the pursuers will not encounter you, and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return. Then afterward you may go on your way.”

Jos 2:17

Jos 2:17And the men said to her, “We shall be exempt from this oath [fn]to you which you have made us swear,

Jos 2:18

Jos 2:18 [fn]unless, when we come into the land, you tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down, and gather into your house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.

Jos 2:19

Jos 2:19“And it shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house outside will have [fn]his blood on his own head, and we will be innocent; but anyone who is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him.

Jos 2:20

Jos 2:20“But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be exempt from the oath which you have made us swear.”

Jos 2:21

Jos 2:21She then said, “According to your words, so be it.” So she sent them away, and they departed; and she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

Jos 2:22

So they departed^H1980 and came^H935 to the hill^H2022 country^H2022, and remained^H3427 there^H8033 for three^H7969 days^H3117, until^H5704 the pursuers^H7291 returned^H7725. Now the pursuers^H7291 had searched^H1245 for them [fn]all^H3605 along the road^H1870, but had not found^H4672 them.

Jos 2:23

Jos 2:23Then the two men returned and came down from the hill country, and they crossed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun. Then they reported to him all that had happened to them.

Jos 2:24

Jos 2:24And they said to Joshua, “The LORD has indeed handed over to us all the land; furthermore, all the inhabitants of the land have despaired because of us.”
