Caleb’s Request

Now these^H428 are the territories which^H834 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 inherited^H5157 in the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, which^H834 Eleazar^H499 the priest^H3548, Joshua^H3091 the son^H1121 of Nun^H5126, and the heads^H7218 of the fathers’^H1 households of the tribes^H4294 of the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 apportioned^H5157 to them as^H5157 inheritances^H5157,

Jos 14:2

Jos 14:2by the lot of their inheritance, just as the LORD commanded [fn]through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

Jos 14:3

Jos 14:3For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but he did not give an inheritance to the Levites among them.

Jos 14:4

Jos 14:4For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for their livestock and for their property.

Jos 14:5

Jos 14:5The sons of Israel did exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

Jos 14:6

Then the sons^H1121 of Judah^H3063 approached^H5066 Joshua^H3091 in Gilgal^H1537, and Caleb^H3612 the son^H1121 of Jephunneh^H3312 the Kenizzite^H7074 said^H559 to him, “You know^H3045 the word^H1697 which^H834 the LORD^H3068 spoke^H1696 to Moses^H4872 the man^H376 of God^H430 on account^H182 of [fn]you and me in Kadesh-barnea^H6947.

Jos 14:7

Jos 14:7“I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was in my heart.

Jos 14:8

Jos 14:8“Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people [fn]melt with fear; but I followed the LORD my God fully.

Jos 14:9

Jos 14:9“So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘The land on which your foot has walked shall certainly be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God fully.’

Jos 14:10

Jos 14:10“And now behold, the LORD has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now behold, I am eighty-five years old today.

Jos 14:11

Jos 14:11“I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in.

Jos 14:12

Jos 14:12“Now then, give me this hill country about which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I will [fn]drive them out just as the LORD has spoken.”

Jos 14:13

So Joshua^H3091 blessed^H1288 him and gave^H5414 Hebron^H2275 to Caleb^H3612 the son^H1121 of Jephunneh^H3312 as an inheritance^H5159.

Jos 14:14

Jos 14:14Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed the LORD God of Israel fully.

Jos 14:15

Jos 14:15Now the name of Hebron was previously [fn]Kiriath-arba; for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land was at rest from war.
