Five Thousand Men Fed

(Mat 14:13–21; Mar 6:30–44; Luk 9:10–17 )

After^G3326 these^G3778 things^G3778 Jesus^G2424 went^G565 away^G565 to the other^G4008 side^G4008 of the Sea^G2281 of Galilee^G1056 (or Tiberias^G5085).

Jhn 6:2

Jhn 6:2A large crowd was following Him, because they were watching the [fn]signs which He was performing on those who were sick.

Jhn 6:3

Jhn 6:3But Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

Jhn 6:4

Jhn 6:4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

Jhn 6:5

Jhn 6:5So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?”

Jhn 6:6

Jhn 6:6But He was saying this only to test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do.

Jhn 6:7

Jhn 6:7Philip answered Him, “Two hundred [fn]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!”

Jhn 6:8

Jhn 6:8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him,

Jhn 6:9

Jhn 6:9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many people?”

Jhn 6:10

Jhn 6:10Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about [fn]five thousand in number.

Jhn 6:11

Jhn 6:11Jesus then took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted.

Jhn 6:12

Jhn 6:12And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.”

Jhn 6:13

Jhn 6:13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.

Jhn 6:14

Jhn 6:14Therefore when the people saw the [fn]sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Water

(Mat 14:22–33; Mar 6:45–52 )

Jhn 6:15

So^G3767 Jesus^G2424, aware^G1097 that they [fn]intended^G3195 to come^G2064 and take^G726 Him by force^G726 to make^G4160 Him king^G935, withdrew^G402 again^G3825 to the mountain^G3735 by Himself^G846, alone^G3441.

Jhn 6:16

Now^G1161 when^G5613 evening^G3798 came^G1096, His disciples^G3101 went^G2597 down^G2597 to the sea^G2281,

Jhn 6:17

Jhn 6:17and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

Jhn 6:18

Jhn 6:18In addition, the sea began getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing.

Jhn 6:19

Jhn 6:19Then, when they had rowed about [fn]twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat; and they were frightened.

Jhn 6:20

Jhn 6:20But He *said to them, “It is I; [fn]do not be afraid.”

Jhn 6:21

Jhn 6:21So they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

Jhn 6:22

The next^G1887 day^G1887 the crowd^G3793 that stood^G2476 on the other^G4008 side^G4008 of the sea^G2281 saw^G3708 that there was no^G3756 other^G243 small^G4142 boat^G4142 there^G1563 except^G1508 one^G1520, and that Jesus^G2424 had not gotten^G4897 into^G4897 the boat^G4143 with^G4897 His disciples^G3101, but that His disciples^G3101 had departed^G565 alone^G3441.

Jhn 6:23

Jhn 6:23Other small boats came from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

Jhn 6:24

Jhn 6:24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus.

Jhn 6:25

Jhn 6:25And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Jhn 6:26

Jesus^G2424 answered^G611 them and said^G3004, “Truly^G281, truly^G281, I say^G3004 to you, you seek^G2212 Me, not because^G3754 you saw^G3708 [fn]signs^G4592, but because^G3754 you ate^G2068 some^G1537 of^G1537 the loaves^G740 and were filled^G5526.

Jhn 6:27

Jhn 6:27“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His [fn]seal.”

Jhn 6:28

Jhn 6:28Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?”

Jhn 6:29

Jhn 6:29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

Jhn 6:30

Jhn 6:30So they said to Him, “What then are You doing as a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work are You performing?

Jhn 6:31

Jhn 6:31“Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’”

Jhn 6:32

Jhn 6:32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.

Jhn 6:33

Jhn 6:33“For the bread of God is [fn]that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jhn 6:34

Jhn 6:34Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

Jhn 6:35

Jesus^G2424 said^G3004 to them, “I am^G1510 the bread^G740 of life^G2222; the one who comes^G2064 to Me will not be^G3983 hungry^G3983, and the one who believes^G4100 in Me will never^G3756^G3361 be^G1372 thirsty^G1372.

Jhn 6:36

Jhn 6:36“But I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe.

Jhn 6:37

Jhn 6:37“Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out.

Jhn 6:38

Jhn 6:38“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Jhn 6:39

Jhn 6:39“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of everything that He has given Me I will lose nothing, but will raise it up on the last day.

Jhn 6:40

Jhn 6:40“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Words to the Jews

Jhn 6:41

So^G3767 then^G3767 the Jews^G2453 were complaining^G1111 about^G4012 Him because^G3754 He said^G3004, “I am^G1510 the bread^G740 that came^G2597 down^G2597 out of heaven^G3772.”

Jhn 6:42

Jhn 6:42And they were saying, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”

Jhn 6:43

Jhn 6:43Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves.

Jhn 6:44

Jhn 6:44“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.

Jhn 6:45

Jhn 6:45“It is written in the Prophets: ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.

Jhn 6:46

Jhn 6:46“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.

Jhn 6:47

Jhn 6:47“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life.

Jhn 6:48

Jhn 6:48“I am the bread of life.

Jhn 6:49

Jhn 6:49“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

Jhn 6:50

Jhn 6:50“This is the bread that comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and not die.

Jhn 6:51

Jhn 6:51“I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I will give for the life of the world also is My flesh.”

Jhn 6:52

Then^G3767 the Jews^G2453 began to argue^G3164 with one^G240 another^G240, saying^G3004, “How^G4459 can^G1410 this^G3778 Man^G3778 give^G1325 us His flesh^G4561 to eat^G2068?”

Jhn 6:53

Jhn 6:53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.

Jhn 6:54

Jhn 6:54“The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

Jhn 6:55

Jhn 6:55“For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

Jhn 6:56

Jhn 6:56“The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.

Jhn 6:57

Jhn 6:57“Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.

Jhn 6:58

Jhn 6:58“This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

Jhn 6:59

Jhn 6:59These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Jhn 6:60

So^G3767 then^G3767 many^G4183 of His disciples^G3101, when they heard^G191 this, said^G3004, “This^G3778 statement^G3056 is very [fn]unpleasant^G4642; who^G5101 can^G1410 listen^G191 to it?”

Jhn 6:61

Jhn 6:61But Jesus, aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this [fn]offensive to you?

Jhn 6:62

Jhn 6:62“What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?

Jhn 6:63

Jhn 6:63“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life.

Jhn 6:64

Jhn 6:64“But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would [fn]betray Him.

Jhn 6:65

Jhn 6:65And He was saying, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

Jhn 6:66

As a result^G1537 of this^G3778 many^G4183 of His disciples^G3101 left^G3694^G565, and would no^G3765 longer^G3765 walk^G4043 with Him.

Jhn 6:67

Jhn 6:67So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?”

Jhn 6:68

Jhn 6:68Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.

Jhn 6:69

Jhn 6:69“And we have already believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”

Jhn 6:70

Jhn 6:70Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”

Jhn 6:71

Jhn 6:71Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, one of the twelve, [fn]was going to betray Him.
