Mary Anoints Jesus

(Mat 26:6–13; Mar 14:3–9 )

Therefore^G3767, six^G1803 days^G2250 before^G4253 the Passover^G3957, Jesus^G2424 came^G2064 to Bethany^G963 where^G3699 Lazarus^G2976 was, whom^G3739 Jesus^G2424 had raised^G1453 from the dead^G3498.

Jhn 12:2

Jhn 12:2So they made Him a dinner there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.

Jhn 12:3

Jhn 12:3Mary then took a [fn]pound of very expensive perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Jhn 12:4

Jhn 12:4But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to [fn]betray Him, *said,

Jhn 12:5

Jhn 12:5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred [fn]denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?”

Jhn 12:6

Jhn 12:6Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he kept the money box, he used to [fn]steal from what was put into it.

Jhn 12:7

Jhn 12:7Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it [fn]for the day of My burial.

Jhn 12:8

Jhn 12:8“For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

Jhn 12:9

The large^G4183 crowd^G3793 of the Jews^G2453 then^G3767 learned^G1097 that He was there^G1563; and they came^G2064, not on^G1223 account^G1223 of^G1223 Jesus^G2424 only^G3440, but so^G2443 that^G2443 they might also^G2532 see^G3708 Lazarus^G2976, whom^G3739 He raised^G1453 from the dead^G3498.

Jhn 12:10

Jhn 12:10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also,

Jhn 12:11

Jhn 12:11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

Jhn 12:12

On the next^G1887 day^G1887, when the large^G4183 crowd^G3793 that had come^G2064 to the feast^G1859 heard^G191 that Jesus^G2424 was coming^G2064 to Jerusalem^G2414,

Jhn 12:13

Jhn 12:13they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, indeed, the King of Israel!”

Jhn 12:14

Jhn 12:14Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

Jhn 12:15

Jhn 12:15“DO NOT FEAR, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY’S COLT.”

Jhn 12:16

Jhn 12:16These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him.

Jhn 12:17

Jhn 12:17So the [fn]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him.

Jhn 12:18

Jhn 12:18For this reason also the [fn]people went to meet Him, because they heard that He had performed this [fn]sign.

Jhn 12:19

Jhn 12:19So the Pharisees said [fn]to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!”

Greeks Seek Jesus

Jhn 12:20

Now^G1161 there^G1563 were some^G5100 Greeks^G1672 among^G1537 those^G3588 who were going^G305 up^G305 to worship^G4352 at the feast^G1859;

Jhn 12:21

Jhn 12:21these people then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

Jhn 12:22

Jhn 12:22Philip *came and *told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus.

Jhn 12:23

Jhn 12:23But Jesus *answered them by saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Jhn 12:24

Jhn 12:24“Truly, truly I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

Jhn 12:25

Jhn 12:25“The one who loves his [fn]life loses it, and the one who hates his [fn]life in this world will keep it [fn]to eternal life.

Jhn 12:26

Jhn 12:26“If anyone [fn]serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [fn]serves Me, the Father will honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

Jhn 12:27

“Now^G3568 My soul^G5590 has become troubled^G5015; and what^G5101 am I to say^G3004? ‘Father^G3962, save^G4982 Me from this^G3778 hour^G5610’? But for this^G3778 purpose I came^G2064 to this^G3778 hour^G5610.

Jhn 12:28

Jhn 12:28“Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

Jhn 12:29

Jhn 12:29So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him!”

Jhn 12:30

Jhn 12:30Jesus responded and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours.

Jhn 12:31

Jhn 12:31“Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

Jhn 12:32

Jhn 12:32“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”

Jhn 12:33

Jhn 12:33Now He was saying this to indicate what kind of death He was going to die.

Jhn 12:34

Jhn 12:34The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from the Law that the [fn]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

Jhn 12:35

Jhn 12:35So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

Jhn 12:36

Jhn 12:36“While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.”

These^G3778 things^G3778 Jesus^G2424 proclaimed^G2980, and He went^G565 away^G565 and hid^G2928 Himself from them.

Jhn 12:37

Jhn 12:37But though He had performed so many [fn]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him.

Jhn 12:38

Jhn 12:38This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?”

Jhn 12:39

Jhn 12:39For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again,

Jhn 12:40

Jhn 12:40“HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WILL NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART, AND [fn]BE CONVERTED, AND SO I WILL NOT HEAL THEM.”

Jhn 12:41

Jhn 12:41These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke about Him.

Jhn 12:42

Jhn 12:42Nevertheless many, even of the rulers, believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be excommunicated from the synagogue;

Jhn 12:43

Jhn 12:43for they loved the [fn]approval of people rather than the [fn]approval of God.

Jhn 12:44

Now^G1161 Jesus^G2424 cried^G2896 out^G2896 and said^G3004, “The one who believes^G4100 in Me, does not believe^G4100 only in Me, but also in Him who sent^G3992 Me.

Jhn 12:45

Jhn 12:45“And the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.

Jhn 12:46

Jhn 12:46“I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness.

Jhn 12:47

Jhn 12:47“If anyone hears My [fn]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

Jhn 12:48

Jhn 12:48“The one who rejects Me and does not [fn]accept My [fn]teachings has one who judges him: the word which I spoke. That will judge him on the last day.

Jhn 12:49

Jhn 12:49“For I did not speak [fn]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.

Jhn 12:50

Jhn 12:50“And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”
