The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

Now^G1161 a certain^G5100 man^G5100 was sick^G770: Lazarus^G2976 of Bethany^G963, the village^G2968 of Mary^G3137 and her sister^G79 Martha^G3136.

Jhn 11:2

Jhn 11:2And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with [fn]ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

Jhn 11:3

Jhn 11:3So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

Jhn 11:4

Jhn 11:4But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not [fn]meant for death, but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”

Jhn 11:5(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.)

Jhn 11:6

Jhn 11:6So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.

Jhn 11:7

Jhn 11:7Then after this He *said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.”

Jhn 11:8

Jhn 11:8The disciples *said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and yet You are going there again?”

Jhn 11:9

Jhn 11:9Jesus replied, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

Jhn 11:10

Jhn 11:10“But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in [fn]him.”

Jhn 11:11

Jhn 11:11This He said, and after this He *said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.”

Jhn 11:12

Jhn 11:12The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will [fn]come out of it.”

Jhn 11:13

Jhn 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about [fn]actual sleep.

Jhn 11:14

Jhn 11:14So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died,

Jhn 11:15

Jhn 11:15and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.”

Jhn 11:16

Jhn 11:16Therefore Thomas, who was called [fn]Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!”

Jhn 11:17

So^G3767 when Jesus^G2424 came^G2064, He found^G2147 that he had already^G2235 been^G2192 in the tomb^G3419 four^G5064 days^G2250.

Jhn 11:18

Jhn 11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [fn]fifteen stadia away;

Jhn 11:19

Jhn 11:19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.

Jhn 11:20

Jhn 11:20So then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary [fn]stayed in the house.

Jhn 11:21

Jhn 11:21Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

Jhn 11:22

Jhn 11:22“Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

Jhn 11:23

Jhn 11:23Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.”

Jhn 11:24

Jhn 11:24Martha *said to Him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”

Jhn 11:25

Jhn 11:25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies,

Jhn 11:26

Jhn 11:26and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Jhn 11:27

Jhn 11:27She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are the [fn]Christ, the Son of God, and [fn]He who comes into the world.”

Jhn 11:28

When she had said^G3004 this^G3778, she left^G565 and called^G5455 Mary^G3137 her sister^G79, saying^G3004 secretly^G2977, “The Teacher^G1320 is here^G3918 and is calling^G5455 for you.”

Jhn 11:29

Jhn 11:29And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.

Now^G1161 Jesus^G2424 had not yet^G3768 come^G2064 into the village^G2968, but was still^G2089 at the place^G5117 where^G3699 Martha^G3136 met^G5221 Him.

Jhn 11:31

Jhn 11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Jhn 11:32

Jhn 11:32So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Jhn 11:33

Jhn 11:33Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and [fn]was troubled,

Jhn 11:34

Jhn 11:34and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

Jhn 11:35

Jhn 11:35Jesus wept.

Jhn 11:36

Jhn 11:36So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”

Jhn 11:37

Jhn 11:37But some of them said, “Could this Man, who opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also [fn]kept this man from dying?”

Jhn 11:38

So^G3767 Jesus^G2424, again^G3825 being deeply^G1690 moved^G1690 within^G1722^G1438, *came^G2064 to the tomb^G3419. Now^G1161 it was a cave^G4693, and a stone^G3037 was lying^G1945 against^G1909 it.

Jhn 11:39

Jhn 11:39Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [fn]there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

Jhn 11:40

Jhn 11:40Jesus *said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

Jhn 11:41

Jhn 11:41So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

Jhn 11:42

Jhn 11:42“But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, because of the [fn]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”

Jhn 11:43

Jhn 11:43And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

Jhn 11:44

Jhn 11:44Out came the man who had died, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Jhn 11:45

Therefore^G3767 many^G4183 of the Jews^G2453 who came^G2064 to Mary^G3137, and saw^G2300 what^G3739 He had done^G4160, believed^G4100 in Him.

Jhn 11:46

Jhn 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

Jhn 11:47

Therefore^G3767 the chief^G749 priests^G749 and the Pharisees^G5330 convened^G4863 a council^G4892 meeting^G4892, and they were saying^G3004, “What^G5101 are we [fn]doing^G4160 in^G3754 regard^G3754 to^G3754 the^G3754 fact^G3754 that^G3754 this^G3778 Man^G444 is performing^G4160 many^G4183 [fn]signs^G4592?

Jhn 11:48

Jhn 11:48“If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our [fn]place and our nation.”

Jhn 11:49

Jhn 11:49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

Jhn 11:50

Jhn 11:50nor are you taking into account that it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.”

Jhn 11:51

Jhn 11:51Now he did not say this [fn]on his own, but as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;

Jhn 11:52

Jhn 11:52and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

Jhn 11:53

Jhn 11:53So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.

Jhn 11:54

Therefore^G3767 Jesus^G2424 no^G3765 longer^G3765 continued to walk^G4043 publicly^G3954 among^G1722 the Jews^G2453, but went^G565 away^G565 from^G1564 there^G1564 to the region^G5561 near^G1451 the wilderness^G2048, into a city^G4172 called^G3004 Ephraim^G2187; and there^G2546 He stayed^G3306 with the disciples^G3101.

Jhn 11:55

Now^G1161 the Passover^G3957 of the Jews^G2453 was near^G1451, and many^G4183 went^G305 up^G305 to Jerusalem^G2414 from the country^G5561 prior^G4253 to the Passover^G3957, in^G2443 order^G2443 to^G2443 [fn]purify^G48 themselves^G1438.

Jhn 11:56

Jhn 11:56So they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?”

Jhn 11:57

Jhn 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
