Jeremiah 7 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Message at the Temple Gate

(cf. Jer 26:4–6 )

The word^H1697 that came^H1961 to Jeremiah^H3414 from the LORD^H3068, saying^H559,

Jer 7:2“Stand at the gate of the LORD’S house and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship the LORD!’”

Jer 7:3

Jer 7:3This is what the LORD of armies, the God of Israel says: “Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you live in this place.

Jer 7:4

Jer 7:4“Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, ‘[fn]This is the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’

Jer 7:5

Jer 7:5“For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a person and his neighbor,

Jer 7:6

Jer 7:6if you do not oppress the stranger, the [fn]orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor follow other gods to your own ruin,

Jer 7:7

Jer 7:7then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

Jer 7:8

“Behold^H2009, you are trusting^H982 in deceptive^H8267 words^H1697 to no^H1115 avail^H3276.

Jer 7:9

Jer 7:9“Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, [fn]offer sacrifices to Baal, and follow other gods that you have not known,

Jer 7:10

Jer 7:10then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are saved!’—so that you may do all these abominations?

Jer 7:11

Jer 7:11“Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Behold, I Myself have seen it,” declares the LORD.

“But go^H1980 now^H4994 to My place^H4725 which^H834 was in Shiloh^H7887, where^H834^H8033 I made My name^H8034 dwell^H7931 at the beginning^H7223, and see^H7200 what^H834 I did^H6213 to it because^H4480^H6440 of the wickedness^H7451 of My people^H5971 Israel^H3478.

Jer 7:13

Jer 7:13“And now, because you have done all these things,” declares the LORD, “and I spoke to you, speaking again and again, but you did not listen, and I called you but you did not answer,

Jer 7:14

Jer 7:14therefore I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, just as I did to Shiloh.

Jer 7:15

Jer 7:15“I will hurl you out of My sight, just as I have hurled out all your brothers, all the [fn]descendants of Ephraim.

Jer 7:16

“As for you, do not pray^H6419 for this^H2088 people^H5971, and do not lift^H5375 up^H5375 a cry^H7440 or prayer^H8605 for them, and do not plead^H6293 with Me; for I am not listening^H8085 to you.

Jer 7:17

Jer 7:17“Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Jer 7:18

Jer 7:18“The [fn]children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make sacrificial cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to provoke Me to anger.

Jer 7:19

Jer 7:19“Are they provoking Me?” declares the LORD. “Is it not themselves instead, to their [fn]own shame?”

Jer 7:20

Jer 7:20Therefore this is what the Lord [fn]GOD says: “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on human and animal life, and on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

Jer 7:21

This^H3541 is^H3541 what^H3541 the LORD^H3068 of armies^H6635, the God^H430 of Israel^H3478 says^H559: “Add^H3254 your burnt^H5930 offerings^H5930 to your sacrifices^H2077 and eat^H398 flesh^H1320.

Jer 7:22

Jer 7:22“For I did not speak to your fathers, or command them on the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Jer 7:23

Jer 7:23“But this is [fn]what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you shall walk [fn]entirely in the way which I command you, so that it may go well for you.’

Jer 7:24

Jer 7:24“Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked by their own advice and in the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and they [fn]went backward and not forward.

Jer 7:25

Jer 7:25“Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants the prophets, sending them daily, again and again.

Jer 7:26

Jer 7:26“Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did more evil than their fathers.

Jer 7:27

“So you shall speak^H1696 all^H3605 these^H428 words^H1697 to them, but they will not listen^H8085 to you; and you shall call^H7121 to them, but they will not answer^H6030 you.

Jer 7:28

Jer 7:28“And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God or accept discipline; [fn]trustworthiness has perished and has been eliminated from their mouth.

Jer 7:29

‘Cut^H1494 off^H1494 [fn]your hair^H5145 and throw^H7993 it away^H7993,

And take^H5375 up^H5375 a song^H7015 of^H7015 mourning^H7015 on the bare^H8205 heights^H8205;

For the LORD^H3068 has rejected^H3988 and forsaken^H5203

The generation^H1755 of His wrath^H5678.’

Jer 7:30

“For the sons^H1121 of Judah^H3063 have done^H6213 that which^H7451 is^H7451 evil^H7451 in My sight^H5869,” declares^H5002 the LORD^H3068. “They have put^H7760 their detestable^H8251 things^H8251 in the house^H1004 which^H834 is called^H7121 by My name^H8034, to defile^H2930 it.

Jer 7:31

Jer 7:31“They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben-hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come into My [fn]mind.

Jer 7:32

“Therefore^H3651, behold^H2009, days^H3117 are coming^H935,” declares^H5002 the LORD^H3068, “when it will no^H3808 longer^H5750 be called^H559 Topheth^H8612, or the Valley^H1516 of Ben-hinnom^H1121^H2011, but the Valley^H1516 of the Slaughter^H2028; for they will bury^H6912 in Topheth^H8612 [fn]because^H4480 there^H369 is^H369 no^H369 other place^H4725.

Jer 7:33

Jer 7:33“The dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth; and no one will frighten them away.

Jer 7:34

Jer 7:34“Then I will eliminate from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride; for the land will become a site of ruins.
