Hananiah’s False Prophecy

Now in the same^H1931 year^H8141, in the beginning^H7225 of the reign^H4467 of Zedekiah^H6667 king^H4428 of Judah^H3063, in the fourth^H7243 year^H8141, in the fifth^H2549 month^H2320, Hananiah^H2608 the prophet^H5030 the son^H1121 of Azzur^H5809, who^H834 was from Gibeon^H1391, spoke^H559 to me at the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068 in the sight^H5869 of the priests^H3548 and all^H3605 the people^H5971, saying^H559,

Jer 28:2

Jer 28:2“This is what the LORD of armies, the God of Israel says: ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Jer 28:3

Jer 28:3‘Within two years I am going to bring back to this place all the vessels of the LORD’S house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon.

Jer 28:4

Jer 28:4‘I am also going to bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the LORD, ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Jer 28:5

Then Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030 spoke^H559 to the prophet^H5030 Hananiah^H2608 in the sight^H5869 of the priests^H3548 and in the sight^H5869 of all^H3605 the people^H5971 who were standing^H5975 at the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068,

Jer 28:6

Jer 28:6and Jeremiah the prophet said, “Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD fulfill your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the LORD’S house and all the exiles, from Babylon to this place.

Jer 28:7

Jer 28:7“Yet hear now this word which I am going to speak [fn]so that you and all the people can hear it!

Jer 28:8

Jer 28:8“The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times also prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms regarding war, disaster, and plague.

Jer 28:9

Jer 28:9“As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent.”

Jer 28:10

Then Hananiah^H2608 the prophet^H5030 took^H3947 the yoke^H4133 from the neck^H6677 of Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030 and broke^H7665 it.

Jer 28:11

Jer 28:11Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Even so within two full years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” Then Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

Jer 28:12

Then the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came^H1961 to Jeremiah^H3414 after^H310 Hananiah^H2608 the prophet^H5030 had broken^H7665 the yoke^H4133 from the neck^H6677 of Jeremiah^H3414 the prophet^H5030, saying^H559,

Jer 28:13

Jer 28:13“Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘This is what the LORD says: “You have broken the yokes of wood, but in their place you have made yokes of iron.”

Jer 28:14

Jer 28:14‘For this is what the LORD of armies, the God of Israel says: “I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him. And I have also given him the animals of the field.”’”

Jer 28:15

Jer 28:15Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah: the LORD has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie.

Jer 28:16

Jer 28:16“Therefore, this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I am going to [fn]remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to die, because you spoke falsely against the LORD.’”

Jer 28:17

So Hananiah^H2608 the prophet^H5030 died^H4191 in the same^H1931 year^H8141, in the seventh^H7637 month^H2320.
