Jeremiah 16 :: New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB20)

Distresses Foretold

The word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 also came^H1961 to me, saying^H559,

Jer 16:2“You shall not take a wife for yourself nor have sons or daughters in this place.”

Jer 16:3For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and concerning their mothers who give birth to them, and their fathers who father them in this land:

Jer 16:4

Jer 16:4“They will die of deadly diseases, they will not be mourned or buried; they will be like dung on the surface of the ground. And they will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth.”

Jer 16:5

For this^H3541 is^H3541 what^H3541 the LORD^H3068 says^H559: “Do not enter^H935 a house^H1004 of mourning^H4798, or go^H1980 to mourn^H5594 or to console^H5110 them; for I have withdrawn^H622 My peace^H7965 from this^H2088 people^H5971,” declares^H5002 the LORD^H3068, “and My favor^H2617 and compassion^H7356.

Jer 16:6

Jer 16:6“Both great people and small will die in this land; they will not be buried, people will not mourn for them, nor will anyone make cuts on himself or have his head shaved for them.

Jer 16:7

Jer 16:7“People will not break bread in mourning for them, to comfort anyone for the dead, nor give them a cup of consolation to drink for anyone’s father or mother.

Jer 16:8

Jer 16:8“Moreover, you shall not go into a house of feasting to sit with them to eat and drink.”

Jer 16:9

Jer 16:9For this is what the LORD of armies, the God of Israel says: “Behold, I am going to eliminate from this place, before your eyes and in your time, the voice of rejoicing and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride.

Jer 16:10

“Now it will happen^H1961 that, when^H3588 you tell^H5046 this^H2088 people^H5971 all^H3605 these^H428 words^H1697, they will say^H559 to you, ‘For^H5921 what^H4100 reason^H5921^H4100 has the LORD^H3068 declared^H1696 all^H3605 this^H2088 great^H1419 disaster^H7451 against^H5921 us? And what^H4100 is our wrongdoing^H5771, or what^H4100 is our sin^H2403 that we have committed^H2398 against the LORD^H3068 our God^H430?’

Jer 16:11

Jer 16:11“Then you are to say to them, ‘It is because your forefathers have abandoned Me,’ declares the LORD, ‘and have followed other gods, and served and worshiped them; but they have abandoned Me and have not kept My Law.

Jer 16:12

Jer 16:12‘You too have done evil, even more than your forefathers; for behold, each one of you is following the stubbornness of his own evil heart, without listening to Me.

Jer 16:13

Jer 16:13‘So I will hurl you off this land to the land which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers; and there you will serve other gods day and night, because I will show you no compassion.’

God Will Restore Them

(cf. Jer 23:7, 8 )

Jer 16:14

“Therefore^H3651 behold^H2009, days^H3117 are coming^H935,” declares^H5002 the LORD^H3068, “when it will no^H3808 longer^H5750 be said^H559, ‘As the LORD^H3068 lives^H2416, who^H834 brought^H5927 up^H5927 the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 out of the land^H776 of Egypt^H4714,’

Jer 16:15

Jer 16:15but, ‘As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had banished them.’ For I will restore them to their own land which I gave to their fathers.

Jer 16:16

“Behold^H2009, I am going to send^H7971 for many^H7227 fishermen^H1728,” declares^H5002 the LORD^H3068, “and they will fish^H1770 for them; and afterward^H310^H3651 I will send^H7971 for many^H7227 hunters^H6719, and they will hunt^H6679 them from every^H3605 mountain^H2022 and every^H3605 hill^H1389 and from the clefts^H5357 of the rocks^H5553.

Jer 16:17

Jer 16:17“For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their wrongdoing concealed from My eyes.

Jer 16:18

Jer 16:18“I will first repay them double for their wrongdoing and their sin, because they have defiled My land; they have filled My inheritance with the carcasses of their detestable idols and their abominations.”

Jer 16:19

LORD^H3068, my strength^H5797 and my stronghold^H4581,

And my refuge^H4498 in the day^H3117 of distress^H6869,

To You the nations^H1471 will come^H935

From the ends^H657 of the earth^H776 and say^H559,

“Our fathers^H1 have inherited^H5157 nothing^H389 but^H389 falsehood^H8267,

Futility^H1892, and [fn]things of no^H369 benefit^H3276.”

Jer 16:20

Can a person^H120 make^H6213 gods^H430 for himself?

But they are not gods^H430!

Jer 16:21

“Therefore^H3651 behold^H2009, I am going to make them know^H3045—

This^H2088 time^H6471 I will make them know^H3045

My [fn]power^H3027 and My might^H1369;

And they will know^H3045 that My name^H8034 is the LORD^H3068.”
