Israel Rebuked

Now the angel^H4397 of the LORD^H3068 came^H5927 up^H5927 from Gilgal^H1537 to Bochim^H1066. And he said^H559, “I brought^H5927 you up^H5927 out of Egypt^H4714 and led^H935 you into the land^H776 which^H834 I have sworn^H7650 to your fathers^H1; and I said^H559, ‘I will never^H3808^H5769 break^H6565 My covenant^H1285 with you,

Jdg 2:2

Jdg 2:2and as for you, you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not [fn]obeyed Me; what is this thing that you have done?

Jdg 2:3

Jdg 2:3“Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from you; but they will [fn]become like thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’”

Jdg 2:4

Jdg 2:4Now when the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people raised their voices and wept.

Jdg 2:5

Jdg 2:5So they named that place [fn]Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the LORD.

Joshua Dies

Jdg 2:6

When Joshua^H3091 had dismissed^H7971 the people^H5971, the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 went^H1980, each^H376 one to his inheritance^H5159, to take^H3423 possession^H3423 of the land^H776.

Jdg 2:7

Jdg 2:7The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who [fn]survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel.

Jdg 2:8

Jdg 2:8Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.

Jdg 2:9

Jdg 2:9And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Jdg 2:10

Jdg 2:10All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and another generation rose up after them who did not know the LORD, nor even the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel Serves the Baals

Jdg 2:11

Then the sons^H1121 of Israel^H3478 did^H6213 evil^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068 and [fn]served^H5647 the Baals^H1168,

Jdg 2:12

Jdg 2:12and they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them; so they provoked the LORD to anger.

Jdg 2:13

Jdg 2:13They abandoned the LORD and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

Jdg 2:14

Jdg 2:14Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He handed them over to plunderers, and they plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand [fn]against their enemies.

Jdg 2:15

Jdg 2:15Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for [fn]evil, as the LORD had spoken and just as the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

Jdg 2:16

Then the LORD^H3068 raised^H6965 up^H6965 judges^H8199 [fn]who saved^H3467 them from the hands^H3027 of those who plundered^H8154 them.

Jdg 2:17

Jdg 2:17Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they [fn]committed infidelity with other gods and bowed down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do the same as their fathers.

Jdg 2:18

Jdg 2:18And when the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them.

Jdg 2:19

Jdg 2:19But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways.

Jdg 2:20

Jdg 2:20So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has violated My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice,

Jdg 2:21

Jdg 2:21I in turn will no longer drive out from them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died,

Jdg 2:22

Jdg 2:22in order to test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it as their fathers [fn]did, or not.”

Jdg 2:23

Jdg 2:23So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not hand them over to Joshua.
